He started very strong and looked good – we were leading the game early on. He got into a little trouble (4th inning I believe – 1st & 2nd, nobody out) when a routine ground ball was hit down third base line. Looked to be a routine double play but our infamous hustler Aramis Ramirez waved at it as it passed by, barely bending over. It went for a double and two runs scored. After the smoke cleared, Pirates were way behind and Ryan’s head was down. I believe he didn’t have the maturity at that time to mentally overcome bad Pirates baseball. He blew his arm out (Tommy John surgery) shortly afterwards; probably from trying too hard to do it all himself after being victimized by Ramirez’s lack of effort. More of a statement about Ryan’s lack of maturity at the time I think than Ramirez’s laziness. Glad to see him having success.
