Marte to Make Debut; Hernandez Optioned

The Pittsburgh Pirates made several moves on Thursday. Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was added to the 25-man roster.

Rodriguez was acquired from the Houston Astros on Tuesday night in exchange for three prospects. He will make his Pirates debut on Saturday in Houston. In order to move him into the rotation, the Pirates have sent right-hander Kevin Correia to the bullpen. Left-hander Erik Bedard’s scheduled Saturday start will be pushed back to Monday.

Prospect Starling Marte was also officially added to the roster on Thursday. The club optioned reliever Evan Meek to Triple-A yesterday to make room. Marte will make his Major League debut tonight in Houston. He is batting leadoff, playing left field and will wear No. 6.
