Minor League Schedule: 7/22/12

State College will play a doubleheader today. The second game is a makeup of Friday’s rain out.  Both DSL teams as well as the GCL Pirates are off today. All three teams resume their schedule Monday. Altoona will play a doubleheader today. West Virginia finished the second game of Friday night’s doubleheader prior to the regularly scheduled game last night. The game was suspended in the third inning with the Power winning 7-1.  A full recap of yesterday’s games can be found here.

Hafner is still looking for his first win of the season

Triple-A: Indianapolis (62-40) @ Toledo (41-60) 6:00pm
Probable starter: Daniel Cabrera (4-4 4.29)

Daniel Cabrera will make his 16th start for Indianapolis tonight. He has pitched a total of 79.2 innings, giving up 86 hits, three homers, 28 walks and he has 46 strikeouts with a 1.11 GO/AO ratio. In his last start, Daniel went just one scoreless inning before the game was delayed by over two hours due to rain. He had pitched a complete game in his previous outing, allowing two runs over nine innings and taking the loss.

Double-A: Altoona (47-51) VS Erie (46-53) 5:00pm DH
Probable starter:  Brandon Cumpton (8-8 3.49) and TBD

Brandon Cumpton will make his 19th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 105.2 innings, allowing 92 hits, five homers, 33 walks and he has 66 strikeouts. In his last start, Brandon allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings. At home this year, he is 6-4 3.43 in ten starts No starter has been named for game two. Nate Baker is a possibility now with Tim Alderson going on the DL. Baker has not pitched in five days and has started 12 games this year before being moved to relief in mid-June.

High-A: Bradenton (46-53 overall 17-12 2nd half) vs Tampa (47-49 overall 17-12 2nd half) 5:00pm
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (6-7 4.96)

Tyler Waldron will make his 18th start and 20th overall appearance this season. He has pitched a total of 98 innings, allowing 121 hits, nine homers, 23 walks and he has 64 strikeouts with a 1.34 GO/AO ratio. Tyler has pitched well in each of his last three starts, giving up four earned runs over 19 innings of work. At home this year, he is 5-2 4.63 with 44 strikeouts in 56.1 innings of work

Low-A: West Virginia (38-61 overall 15-14 2nd half) vs Delmarva (39-58 overall 11-17 2nd half) 2:05pm
Probable starter: Ryan Hafner (0-7 7.11)

Ryan Hafner will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has also made two relief appearances. Ryan has pitched a total of 55.2 innings, allowing 65 hits, five homers, 59 walks and he has struck out 27 batters with a 1.52 WHIP. In his last start, Hafner went five innings for just the second time this season and first time since May 5th. He allowed one hit, though he gave up seven walks and four runs. Ryan has an 8.83 ERA in five starts since the All-Star break.

Short Season A: State College (17-15) @ Williamsport (11-21) 5:05pm DH
Probable Starter: Adrian Sampson (0-0 3.86) and Clario Perez (NR)

Yesterday’s Result: State College 5 Williamsport 2

Clario Perez will make his debut for State College and his first start of the season. He pitched 16 games for West Virginia this year, going 1-1 5.84 with two saves. He has pitched a total of 24.2 innings, allowing 24 hits, three homers, 14 walks and he has 19 strikeouts. Adrian Sampson will start the other game tonight. He has made two starts and two relief appearances since signing as the fifth round draft pick in this year’s draft. He has pitched a total of 11.2 innings, giving up 12 hits, one homer, four walks and he has 13 strikeouts.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
