Pirates Acquire Gaby Sanchez and Prospect From Marlins

UPDATE 3:24 PM: Peter Gammons reports the Pirates also received minor league right-handed reliever Kyle Kaminska in the deal. Kaminska has been pitching for Double-A, and currently has a 5.11 ERA in 49.1 innings, with a 42:9 K/BB ratio. He’s 23 years old. Kaminska wasn’t a top 30 prospect in Baseball America’s rankings of the Marlins’ system, and rated as the 9th best right handed relief prospect. After being drafted in 2007, he was said to have a lively low 90s fastball, a short slider, and a solid changeup.

UPDATE 3:06 PM: Rosenthal says it is official.

UPDATE 3:03 PM: Sanchez is hitting for a .202/.250/.306 line in 183 at-bats this year, so he’s in a down year. In his last two seasons he combined for a .269/.346/.437 line in 1144 at-bats, with 19 homers each year. He’s a first baseman and a right handed hitter. In his career he has a .715 OPS against right handers, and an .878 OPS against left-handers, so he could factor in to the platoon with Garrett Jones at first base if Casey McGehee struggles. Or this could signal the end of McGehee with the Pirates.

3:01 PM: Ken Rosenthal has the following report, saying Gaby Sanchez could be acquired for Gorkys Hernandez and the competitive balance pick.

More info to come.

  1. DO IT!!!!

  2. I was thinking Carlos Lee might be good pickup to have off the bench. I like this a lot more.

  3. Fantastic trade!!! Only thing I don’t understand is what they’ll do with McGehee. I’m assuming Sanchez will platoon with Jones at first, but I’m not sure about that. We’ve added a lot of depth so far.

  4. He’s hitting .202. Don’t like giving up the comp pick.

  5. I’m not sure Gaby Sanchez comes straight to PGH. He could possibly stay in AAA this year and be in line for the 1B in 2013 when McGehee is gone. I’m just putting that out there as a possibility.
As for the trade itself, if it is just Gorkys and the balance pick this is a complete grand theft by the Pirates. I have never been a fan of Gorkys and felt his upside, if everything worked out, was a 5th OF and defensive replacement. To get a 1B with 3 (possibly 4 depending on how his service clock was affected by his demotion) years of cost-control is fantastic.

    • I’m hoping they just use him off the bench for now…would be good to have somebody other than McGehee with some power off the bench.

    • Barret Barnes and Vic Black were comp picks.

Then there’s the $$$$ we could’ve used in the draft. Throw a million more at Appel (and Satan) and maybe he signs?

      Don’t like it.

  6. Not liking this trade as much as our acquisition of Snider.

  7. How can anyone not like this trade?

  8. wow that’s way to much for a 202 hitter.

    • Everyone is having a down year in Miami… look at Reyes, Bell, Hanley Ramirez before he was traded. Something is going on down there. If he can come close to his production from last year, this is a steal!

  9. Don’t like this trade?– .– this kid is an absolute stud and with four years of control is an absolute steal. the snyder trade is even better- wow a middle reliever for a 24 year old phenom– amazing.. NH you are the man

  10. This is a fantastic trade. The Bucs get a long-term option at 1B and can choose either to keep him at AAA or bring him off the bench. Gorkys was fun to watch play the outfield, but his bat was terrible. You’d prefer not to have to give up a comp pick, but if Gaby can return to his 2010-2011 form and hit .260/.345/.435 with about 20 HR and 80 RBI, then this is an excellent trade.

  11. why is everyone saying gaby sanchez is 23 or 24 years old? I could of swore he was 28 or 29 years old already….?

  12. Really improves the defense. In a week we have upgraded LF and 1B from bad defenders to gold glove caliber players. Now lets hope that Sanchez can rediscover his stroke. If he does this is an absolute steal.

  13. The Marlins keep managing to destroy their team more everyday. At least they built an empty shrine to tacky art in the meantime.

  14. I like all the players we got today and the only one I will miss is Lincoln. I can see Lincoln winning a spot in the Jays rotation next year. I will miss seeing lincoln at the plate. A shame he went to the AL.

  15. I really want to know what Michael Coyle thinks of this trade.

  16. So what do you think we are going to do with Jones now with the additions of Snider and Sanchez? With Snider for the most part taking over right field do you think Sanchez is going to get a shot at being our everyday 1st basemen with him coming off an all star year? Just wondering I guess about how our depth chart is sitting now after these moves
