However, lately I’ve found myself going back to it. Before the season started I was really hoping they would bring Rocco out of his baseball hiatus. Because as of now, there are no baseball people on the fan

I quit listening to sport talk shows years ago.

I think I’m going to have to start listening to another radio station because all 93.7 talks about is how there’s no way to know when they’ll be in this position again, so it’s worth it to mortgage some of the future, that the fans deserve this. Personally, I’d say the fans deserve a perennial winner and all around good, consistent team. I’m not really sure how that will be possible if we trade away major pieces of the future. I’ll agree, Cole, Taillon, and Marte aren’t proven at the next level, but does that mean they’re worthless? Yes, there’s no sure thing as far as prospects are concerned. However, if you trade away major farmhands for players that will only be around for even 3 years, what happens in 2 or 3 years? Rather than being in a great potential position, you know exactly where you’ll be….at the bottom of the pile….again. Then, the fans will revolt, citing that they’re returning to their losing ways. Before last season, the consensus was that the Pirates are 2-3 years away. Then they had a good first half last season, and everyone lost track of the plan. If you look at the big picture, to get to the ultimate prize, aren’t they still a year or two away? I would argue that an enormous part of the potential future success lies in the top 5 prospects right now.

What will this team look like if Marte can come in and produce well next year, hit close to .300 with a little pop, not to mention the defense. What will this team look like whenever Cole arrives? What if, god forbid, Grossman really puts it together in AAA next year? There’s a guy right there, that unlike Marte, will most likely be deemed ready for the show if he can produce with a decent average on a consistent basis, as he already brings all of the peripheral abilities and statistics that are holding Marte back from being in Pittsburgh right now.

Not that I even think the Pirates are guilty of overrating their own prospects, however, I think it’s necessary for an organization in their situation to do exactly that. Maybe fans, or writers, have just been spoiled the last few years with drafting so highly. If the Pirates are going to continue to be a moderately successful franchise, it will be a very long time before they have the opportunity to draft the likes of Cole or Taillon. I just wish the people we expect to be in the know would acknowledge how special some of these players are, as well as how dependent the long term success of this franchise is on them.

The guy has really put together a nice consistent, healthy year. Congrats Victor!

I am also happy to see RG continue his resurgence. Free Joely Rodriguez! :)

Osuna, Curry, Dickerson….hopefully one of them will become a viable slugging 1bman.
