Gerrit Cole will get the start tonight for Altoona. He ranks third among all Pirates minor league pitchers in strikeouts behind Justin Wilson and Jeff Locke. Cole’s 103.2 innings ranks 11th in the organization and his overall ERA of 3.04 trails only Jeff Locke(2.66) and Phil Irwin(2.87) among pitchers who have thrown at least 70 innings. Rick VandenHurk will make his 15th start of the year for Indy tonight. He has also pitched twice in relief and made one early season rehab start while with Bradenton. For Indy, he has pitched a total of 91.2 innings, allowing 89 hits, seven homers, 30 walks and he has struck out 82, to go along with a 1.21 GO/AO ratio. In his last start, Rick went seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks. He has struck out at least seven batters in each of his last four starts.

Gerrit Cole will make his ninth start for Altoona, and 22nd start overall on the season. With Bradenton, he went 5-1 2.55 with 67 strikeouts in 69 innings.  For Altoona, he has pitched 36.2 innings, giving up 37 hits, two homers, ten walks and he has 37 strikeouts. In his last start, which was interrupted by a rain delay, he threw 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. In his previous outing against Trenton, he threw six shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk, while striking out six.

High-A: Bradenton (52-64 overall 23-23 2nd half) @ Palm Beach (54-61 overall 24-24 2nd half) 6:35pm

No starter has been named as of yet for tonight’s game. It is possible that Casey Sadler(3-5 3.81) makes the start. On 8/5, he threw 4.2 innings against Palm Beach, allowing seven runs. He gave up two homers in that game, one more than he had given up in his first 99.1 innings on the season

Low-A: West Virginia (49-68 overall 26-21 2nd half) @ Lexington (65-51 overall 26-21 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Porfirio Lopez (2-2 6.45)

Porfirio Lopez will make his second start of the season after beginning the year with 21 relief appearances. In his first start, Lopez pitched five scoreless innings. Between his 12 outings with Bradenton, and the 11 for West Virginia, he has pitched a total of 50.2 innings, giving up 46 hits, three homers, 24 walks and he has 40 strikeouts. Porfirio has an 0.57 GO/AO ratio. He has thrown three innings against Lexington twice this year, allowing no runs the first time on 5/14 and two runs in the second game nine days later.

Probable Starter: Adrian Sampson (0-0 2.81)

Adrian Sampson will make his sixth start of the year tonight. He has also made two relief appearances. Adrian has pitched a total of 25.2 innings, giving up 22 hits, one homer, seven walks and he has 26 strikeouts. He has not allowed an earned run in each of his last two starts, giving up a combined total of four hits, two walks and he has struck out nine. Sampson has an 0.96 GO/AO ratio and a .229 BAA.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
