Minor League Schedule: 8/20/12

Bradenton is off today. West Virginia is 1.5 games out in their division, with 14 games left on the season. Indianapolis has a ten game lead in their division with 15 games left to their schedule.  The GCL Pirates and both DSL affiliates were off yesterday. All three teams resume their schedule today and they each have six games left in their regular season. Both the GCL Pirates and the Pirates1 of the DSL are tied for first place in their division. Kyle McPherson will make his third start for Indianapolis tonight

Triple-A: Indianapolis (75-53) @ Syracuse (63-67) 7:00pm

Kyle McPherson will make his third start for Indianapolis tonight. He has also made nine starts for Altoona this year, going 3-5 4.07, with 46 strikeouts in 48.2 innings. In his first start for Indy, McPherson went six innings, giving up one run on three hits, with no walks and six strikeouts. In start number two, he gave up two runs(one earned) in 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, one homer and two walks, while again striking out six batters. He has an 0.62 GO/AO ratio on the year and has allowed just seven walks in 60 innings.

Double-A: Altoona (59-67) @ Trenton (72-54) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Kris Johnson (1-2 2.66)

Kris Johnson will get his 11th start of the season tonight, eighth for Altoona. He has also made three starts and 16 relief appearances for Indianapolis, as well as another six games out of the bullpen for the Curve. Johnson is 0-2 2.30 as a starter for Altoona, with a .229 BAA and 2.19 GO/AO ratio in 31.1 innings. In his last start, he went six innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk, with six strikeouts. Altoona has lost six straight games.

Bradenton is off today. They are in second place, one game behind Jupiter in the standings. The Marauders have 13 games left in the season and three games left against Jupiter. Six of their remaining games are against today’s opponent, Ft Myers. Bradenton is 5-5 in their last ten games.

Mike Jefferson will make his 11th start of the year tonight. He has also pitched 17 times in relief. On the year, he has pitched a total of 90 innings, giving up 92 hits, 11 homers, 37 walks and he has 73 strikeouts. In his last start, he allowed six earned runs on six hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. Jefferson has a 5.48 ERA as a starter and a 4.94 ERA as a reliever. His ERA at home is 6.80 in 42.1 innings, while on the road it is 3.78 in 47.2 innings

Jason Creasy will make his 12th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 44.1 innings, giving up 54 hits, three homers, 15 walks and he has 27 strikeouts. He has failed to get through five innings in each of his last four starts. In August, he is 0-2 6.75 in three outings, giving up 22 baserunners in 9.1 innings. His last five inning start was against Williamsport, today’s opponent. In that game on 7/21, he gave up two runs on six hits, with no walks and five strikeouts.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
