Minor League Schedule: 8/28/12

West Virginia was off yesterday. Bradenton was postponed yesterday. They will play a doubleheader today. Indianapolis won their division. The DSL and GCL regular seasons are over. The GCL Pirates will play the Red Sox affiliate in a best of three playoff series beginning today, for the GCL title.  The DSL Pirates1 began their playoffs against the Mets yesterday, taking the first game of the best of three series. Phil Irwin struck out nine batters in his last start

Probable starter: Phil Irwin (1-0 2.70)

Phil Irwin will make his third start for Indianapolis tonight. In ten innings, he has allowed three runs on ten hits and three walks, with an outstanding total of 17 strikeouts. Between all three stops this year(18 games for Altoona, one for Bradenton), Phil has pitched a total of 119.1 innings, giving up 109 hits, eight homers, 20 walks and he has struck out 106 batters. He has a 1.58 GO/AO ratio and a .248 BAA.

Double-A: Altoona (66-69) vs Akron (78-57) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Tyler Waldron (1-1 5.09)

Tyler Waldron will make his fifth start for Altoona tonight. He made twenty starts and two relief appearances for Bradenton before jumping to AA, going 7-8 with an identical 5.09 ERA. After allowing eight runs over seven innings in his first two AA starts, Tyler has given up just one run in each of his next two starts, throwing a total of 10.2 innings. On the year, he has thrown 132.2 innings, the fifth highest total in the Pirates farm system. His 162 hits allowed are 26 more than the second highest total in the system.

High-A: Bradenton (59-71 overall 30-30 2nd half) vs Ft Myers (56-72 overall 28-33 2nd half) 5:00pm DH
Probable starter: Casey Sadler (4-5 3.62) and Kyle Kaminska (2-0 0.69)

Casey Sadler will get his 16th start of the season tonight. He has also made 15 relief appearances, all prior to the start of July. As a starter, Casey is 4-3 3.80, with 83 innings pitched, allowing 74 hits, four homers and 22 walks. He also struck out 53 batters in that role, with a 1.75 GO/AO ratio and a .242 BAA. In his last start, Sadler gave up one run on three hits in five innings. He has a 2.81 ERA in 52 road innings. Kyle Kaminska will start game two, getting his third start for Bradenton. In his first game, he threw six shutout innings, giving up just one walk and no hits. In his last start, Kyle went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks. This is his fourth season in which he has pitched in the Florida State League, and he has pitched 43 career AA/AAA games.

Zac Fuesser will make his tenth start of the season tonight. He has also pitched twenty times in relief. As a starter, he is 0-1 5.80, with a .302 BAA in 40.1 innings. In his last start, which was against today’s opponent as well, Zac went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks. On the road this year, he has a 2.34 ERA in 50 innings. At home, his ERA is 5.75 in 56.1 innings.

Probable Starter: Joely Rodriguez (3-2 3.32)

Joely Rodriguez will make his 13th start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 57 innings, allowing 56 hits, one homer, 13 walks and he has 28 strikeouts. Joely has a 1.64 GO/AO ratio and a .264 BAA. In his last start, which was against today’s opponent as well, he gave up three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out a season high of six batters. He had made half of his starts at home, posting a 4.08 ERA.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
