I like Jeff Locke and think he has good talent. What he needs most is to hang around an old-school, mature stopper like Burnett. This is all he really lacked, and I’m glad he has gotten the chance for some on-the-job learning along side Burnett in the big leagues.

This is what I wrote back in the spring before the Pirates finally pulled the trigger on the Burnett trade. I’ve followed Burnett since he was a rookie and knew that his presence would reap huge benefits for guys like MacDonald. Just as I said, he has made a great difference for the pitchers on this team.

This was a surprise for many folks who don’t follow baseball as close as I do, but no surprise to me. The only real surprise was that the Pirates management would have the brains to acquire Burnett in the first place.

I’ve drafted and protected Burnett yearly on my fantasy league teams since his first season. When Curt Schilling retired, he became the one active pitcher I have had on my teams the most over the years since I first began in 1987.
