J-Mac was just being the same pitcher he’s been his whole career with the Pirates up until 2012. Tiring out in the 5th inning. So he finally improved in 2012, that is no reason to forget that you had still better have some relief pitcher ready to come in very early in a James McDonald start.
Hurdle should have yanked him when they scored the first 3 runs and it was 7-4. Leaving him in to face Headley was idiotic.

Hey Clint….doncha think you should leave AJ on his regular turn and
rotate all the rest of the guys? This is the opposite of what Mauch did
in ‘64. AJ is our ONLY reliable starter right now! And GIVE Locke a shot! What do you have to lose?
