Pirates Promote McPherson, Wilson; DFA Cruz

The Pittsburgh Pirates made the recall of Kyle McPherson and Justin Wilson official. Pirates Prospects learned about their promotion early this morning.

In order to make room on the roster, the club designated Juan Cruz for assignment, and placed infielder Jordy Mercer on paternity leave for the birth of his first child.

The Pirates also announced that Kevin Correia will make the start tonight in San Diego. The right-hander pitched two innings in last night’s 19-inning game, so will not be able to pitch deep into the game. If McPherson or Wilson come in for relief, it would be both of their Major League debuts.

  1. Does this create another open spot on the 40 man?

  3. Man, I was hoping they would dfa Cruz but I didn’t think they had the balls to do it. I give them credit for that one, though a little late on it.

  4. What? Why on earth is he DFA’d and Qualls is kept?

  5. Not sure why Cruz is DFAd – he provided exactly what the Pirates wanted when they signed him. Cruz never has a good WHIP but he’s pitching mostly clean innings so ERA does show how well he’s pitched. Certainly the Pirates could have hung onto him for less than two weeks until 40 man rosters take effect.

  6. I think their might be another acquisition before the end of the year. A lot should depend on the injuries and how serious they are. Maybe a nice high priced player for the stretch run
