It could be similar to what existed with Marte this year. Marte had a fantastic spring and everyone wanted him to come north to Pittsburgh. Marte needed time to polish the edges on his game in AAA — go against the major league vets, the junkballers.
Cole will pitch in Spring Training, but he needs to refine his game too. He’ll get AFL time probably, but he needs time in AAA next year. I would actually have the rotation be Burnett, McDonald, Rodriguez, and Karstens. Keep the 5th spot between Leroux and Locke until Cole is ready. Don’t commit to a veteran.

I would assume that if the plans are that immediate, he might spend some time in the real Spring Training in 2013?

I’m so interested to see how they go about it. If he’s on the major league Spring Training roster, watch everyone freak out day 1 about him making the opening day roster.

An idea about that, though. My opinion is that, while yes he’s had mechanical issues to work out this year, other challenges for this season for him were to stay healthy, but primarily build innings. So, if the stuff isn’t an issue, and he puts his time in at Fall instructs and comes out keeping the ball down consistently in Spring Training, does the possibility exist that he could be in Pittsburgh starting off in 2013?

Not likely for Santos/Holt because neither is on 40 man roster. While it wouldn’t be hard to trim some fat from the 40, it is very rare. Callups will generally be constricted to 40 man roster guys.

Great to see Cole pitching well. I guess he’ll start next year in AAA, making him a potential midseason call-up?

Good to see Cole being dominant….I take that back….it’s GREAT!

Tim….any thought to either Santos or Holt, esp Brock, being brought up in Sept to be ‘a stick’ off the bench? Holt reminds me a bit of Jeff Keppinger, more bat than glove?
