However, it seems like you’re not comparing him to the correct kind of pitcher. You’re basically just saying, these guys are good pitchers and the only way to be dominant is to throw just like them. From your description, it sounds as if Cole just needs to continue to improve his existing plus pitches. There are fastball-slider pitchers out there that are quite successful. You said Verlander, but I’m pretty sure a slider is something he’s worked more into his arsenal since entering the big leagues; he’s always been a fastball/curve guy. So is Strasburg, even though I’d probably call his curve more of a slurve while Verlander has that classic 12-6 motion. Look at another guy on the staff with Verlander though…Scherzer. To my knowledge, he doesn’t even throw a curve as a show pitch, and ultimately I see Cole as primarily a fastball/slider pitcher even though he has a deep arsenal.

Reading over your comment again, I see the focus is more on him moving to the curve if the slider isn’t working as well, and I definitely agree with that. The only comment that I would have is that I think that’s a concept to introduce and work through in the big leagues. I’m not a believer of stats being more important than the process in the minors. So as long as he’s in the minors, I’d rather see him fight through starts working on the slider, than give in and go with the curve. I’d rather see him go to the curve because it needs work, not because other things are failing him. In my opinion, it’s all glorified practice until the jersey says, “Pittsburgh,” across the front.

He seems to only throw it very rarely(from what ive seen) I completely agree his consistency comes and goes but when he relies on a fastball and his sliders missing or the hitters arent fooled he has to use a curve more than he has been. Verlander,Cain,Strasburg they use it as a great setup pitch for the fastball.

It shouldn’t be surprising that he’s not ready for the big time yet, even if other teams are rushing their top pitching prospects along. With his stuff though, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him doing either very well or very poorly start to start. Consistency is one of the biggest keys to being a successful pro ball player; they’re all great athletes.
