Comments on: Evaluations Being Completed On Second Straight Collapse Your best source for news on the Pittsburgh Pirates and their minor league system. I dunno – I thought it was pretty clear when I started out with “Re: teaching slide step -” in response to your post.
But I’ll say it in other words, so perhaps it’ll be a little clearer: ALL of the pitchers in the 2012 Stating Rotation came from other orgs.

“The guys from the minors who learned it here couldn’t teach it to them?”
Huh? Do you propose Jeff Locke “teach” AJ Burnett how to do a slidestep?

“A team that doesn’t teach it’s pitchers the slide step, that every OTHER team uses? ”
I don’t know you, so I have to ask you this question, honestly and without snark: How much time have you spent watching the Pirates’ Low-A, High-A, AA and AAA players? Do you know for a fact that they’re not teaching the pitchers a slidestep?

As far as ” Perhaps a little less time devoted to motivational BS, and more actual playing?”
Not much to say about that – if you don’t like it, you’re never gonna understand what it does for these young men. 3 days spent on non-baseball (but team- and maturity-building [not to mention stamina and strength])? OH NOES!!!!! That only leaves 362 other days to work on baseball! (back to snark, BTW)

By: John Lease Wed, 03 Oct 2012 22:32:00 +0000 No, turning down the package the Indians wanted to give for Bay was the worst mistake, especially considering what he did get for him. And trading anything for Chad Qualls, eesh. Worked out great for McGehee though. And Qualls got to have some more ML service time, so he can’t complain either. Oh, forgot giving away Bautista for Robinzon Diaz. That wasn’t too good either. Or hiring John Russell. Worst manager in Pirate history. Not too good, and then giving him an extension! This is depressing me…

By: John Lease Wed, 03 Oct 2012 22:27:00 +0000 Your point? The guys from the minors who learned it here couldn’t teach it to them? Or perhaps you are pointing out the farm system, that is ‘dramatically’ better, hasn’t produced one of the top 5 starters for this year? Or maybe you are pointing out that the Pirate way has been so uber-good that all the other teams are now abandoning the slide step and letting all players run wild? Well, except when they play the Pirates. Gotta throw out someone. Good thing they already concluded it wasn’t the fault of anyone in the front office. Must have been the minor league coaches. Who hired them again?

AJ: did not come up through Pirates system.

Karstens: ditto
Bedard: Ditto
Correia: Ditto
JMac: ditto

By: John Lease Wed, 03 Oct 2012 08:13:00 +0000 As Clint Hurdle says, it’s not the try hard league.

By: Tim Williams Wed, 03 Oct 2012 04:30:00 +0000 That’s what I recall, but I thought there was one other piece involved.
Also, that “some other piece” is very vague.

By: Tim Williams Wed, 03 Oct 2012 04:28:00 +0000 I have yet to see any details of a Pirates-Headley deal that they turned down. I’ve seen vague comments of what it would cost, but no specific players. Without the specifics, it’s impossible to call the deal “a more-than-fair trade”.

By: RandyLinville Wed, 03 Oct 2012 03:33:00 +0000 IIRC, what DK reported was the Padres wanted three things:
1. A top five prospect
2. either the lottery pick or Lincoln and
3. Some other piece

So, you are right that he doesn’t have/didn’t have specifics. To claim there is absolutely no truth to his assertion that the Padres asked for those three things seems a bit much. I think a likely scenario is the Padres set the parameters defined above as a framework off of which to build. But the Pirates weren’t interested and walked away before specifics could be discussed.

By: whiteAngus Wed, 03 Oct 2012 02:56:00 +0000 there is absolutely no truth that the Padres offered Headley to the Pirates. dejan has never come forth with whom the padres wanted officially, and until that happens this goes into the rumor file.

By: whiteAngus Wed, 03 Oct 2012 02:54:00 +0000 you think they just sit on their hands all the time and do nothing? they dropped bedard and made additions at the deadline. they benched correia in favor of others. they benched mcdonald and gave mcpherson a look. the FO is still working on it.
by the way, best season in over a decade. just sayin.
