MLBPA will treat that threshold as a salary cap and want it raised.

I think Michael is right that this will decrease the gap between the largest and smallest budgets.

An extra $50 million isn’t going to mean anything. The Brewers could have offered more but now the Yankees will have more money also. It won’t be more money with players costing the same, salaries are going to explode again. Small market teams will just be paying more for the same level of player.

Guys like Trout and Strasburg will get $35+ per season. Pirates will be paying more for the same level players. Good thing MLB stopped teams from spending internationally and in the draft.

One thing Kevin, I don’t know where I read it but I believe it was Rob Manfried I believe who said the complete t.v. deal the Dodgers signed will be taken into account, not just the $84 million a year.

The money probably won’t get spread around to everyone and teams like the Brewers would have been able to have a better attempt at keeping Prince Fielder (then again, I wouldn’t turn down that mega-deal from Detroit(even though it is Detroit)).

This is a great thing for small market teams! In one of your other articles, you mentioned the possibility of what the Rays could be if they had money. Now they’ll have some extra to help keep what they have and potentially sign someone. This helps big time in my opinion.
