Pirates Re-Sign Anderson Hernandez, Stefan Welch

As Wilbur Miller pointed out today after the Jared Goedert signing, the Pirates have re-signed a few of their players from last year. Baseball America announced some re-signings yesterday, with the key players for the Pirates being Anderson Hernandez and Stefan Welch. Both players were in the organization in 2012. Hernandez had a major league Spring Training invite last year, and spent the season with Indianapolis. Welch split time between high-A and Double-A, hitting for a .266/.339/.416 line in 440 at-bats between the two levels, with similar results at each level. He also combined for 13 homers, with a bit more power in high-A.

The Pirates also re-signed Rudy Pena, Keoni De Renne, Austin McClune, and Anthony Norman. All four will return to the organization as player coaches. Norman was playing last year in Altoona, but was released, and returned to the organization during instructs as a coach.

…rare to get a combo of experience and youth like Welch for free in the minors…and he performs too. I like these players like Goedert and Welch because they are versatile and display a sound approach at the plate and provide power. Pile up as many of these guys as you can and hope one of them works his way into being the next Garrett Jones.
