Last night, the All-Stars from the Dominican Winter League and the Venezuelan League squared off against each other, with the Dominican team securing an 8-2 victory. The Pirates organization was represented by one player on each side, infielder Alex Valdez for the Dominican team and pitcher Ryan Reid for Venezuela.
Valdez came in during the bottom of the fourth as a defensive replacement at first base. He later switched to shortstop to finish the game. While Valdez has played both of those positions during his career, his primary position has been third base throughout his nine-year career and he has also spent much more time at second base than the other two spots combined. John was born in Kearny, NJ, hometown of the 2B for the Pirates 1909 World Championship team, Dots Miller. In fact they have some of the same relatives in common, so it was only natural for him to become a lifelong Pirates fan. Before joining Pirates Prospects in July 2010, John had written numerous articles on the history of baseball while also releasing his own book and co-authoring another on the history of the game.
