I caution about writing both these guys off as “lost” after 2013. They’ve been around the game for a while, have enough dough, have played in less than ideal circumstances and now …… finally have found a home. They both LIKE being a Pirate.

i actually see both of them WANTING to resign, and to lead the young studs in a dynamic starting rotation.

I can’t wait for JT to pitch in Altoona. Hopefully his appearance is better than the one I saw of Cole’s (where he got hit by a line drive).

If JT gets hit by a line drive, I’m not going to any more games….lol

I think, at that point for Wandy, it would be more about guaranteed money. Meaning, he might not receive an offer of 13-14 million for one year, but at his age, if he could get one last deal for 2-3 years, and approaching or slightly over 20 mil, he’d take it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get around 20 for 2 years if he plays well this season.

I hope both of those veterans return, that would mean they pitched up to expectations. And surpluses are always great in a staff
I don’t see wandy opting out. I believe his player option will be for 13-14 million. I just don’t see a 35 year old gets more than that.

Burnett is a free agent after the season. Wandy has a player option, and would probably decline if he pitches well, just looking at the money floating around this off-season.

I guess they could try to keep one of them. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to try and get compensation picks for each player. But I don’t see both returning.

If both pitched well this year and if Cole succeeds after he arrives, if the Pirates are on the verge of competing in 2014, won’t the Bucs need a #3 type like Burnett or Wandy? Will they be gone because it’s preposterous to pay a #3 as much as they will command? or because it’s preposterous to hope that they could pitch well for yet another season? or both?

It’s an important year for Taillon and for the Pirates. He and Cole need to get it done if the organization is to challenge for pennants. The fans have waited decades for this moment to come.
