I would have attempted the comeback, but mine always come out much too strong and usually get eliminated.

If you were articulate enough to make complete thoughts beyond grunts and groans you would come up with a better argument than “Tim didn’t play baseball.” It makes you look like a joke and destroys any slim chance you had at credibility. Bill James didn’t play baseball either…and Mel Kiper didn’t really play football…ask Bill Polian how that is working out. Fact is Tim and his people outscout the scouts and this site does a far better job on the Pirates than Baseball America ever could. No need to defend yourself Tim. The people that frequent this site know knowledge and facts from loud-mouth bravado.

Good stuff & good for the Pirates. I don’t always agree with management, but this always made LOGICAL sense and now we see the results.

Struggling to find a reason to complain today?

“Good to read though that you didn’t play baseball. I’d already kind of known it though.”

Yep, didn’t play. Just studied it since I was five. Fortunately you don’t need to play to have a strong knowledge of the game.

In 2009 we spent a lot of money on overslots (none ranked higher than ZVR, who never ‘projected’) and all were HS pitchers, who, on average take 4-6 yrs to develop.

It wasn’t until 2010 that we took a pitcher with our first pick.

It is unrealistic to expect a pitcher to have developed into a MLB pitcher. Locke was a 2006 pick. Fearsome 2007.

There are exceptions to the above, but not many.

Pitching, especially overhand, is an extremely unnatural motion. However, the last several years, I think the Pirates have done a good job of properly developing pitchers and building up their workload. Not that I was anything special, but I think I pitched somewhere around 30 innings in my senior year of high school, then maybe another 30 in the summer, so 60 innings. If someone plays year round, maybe they get up to around 80 or 100. But it’s crazy to think pro organizations take kids from going 60-100 innings, then bring them up over 140 the following year. Then you factor in that pitchers who are good enough in high school to get drafted were probably good enough to take innings off, or at least not have to strain as much to get all those out, and a 50% increase in the work load seems that much greater. As a fan, yes, is love to see Heredia dominating in AA this year, but if you’re his parents, or anyone looking out for his future, you have to love how the Pirates organization has progressed him thus far.

He isn’t an ace, he’s a 5th starter and for a 5th starter to go out and blank the Phillies in THEIR ballpark against a pitcher like Cole Hamels. Very well done. I’ll take that every day of the week and twice Sunday.
