Minor League Schedule: 4/7/13

Today is an interesting day for starters. Stolmy Pimentel makes his debut in the Pirates organization, after coming over in the Joel Hanrahan deal. Adrian Sampson will get the start for Bradenton today. The fifth round pick from last year makes the jump over low-A ball, after spending his first season with State College. John Kuchno, who got an over slot deal in the 18th round last year, makes his first professional start for West Virginia. All four games today are afternoon starts. Stolmy Pimentel makes his Pirates debut today.

AAA: Indianapolis (1-2) VS Columbus (2-1) 1:35pm
Probable starter: Kris Johnson (8-4, 3.19 last year for Altoona/Indy)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 5 Columbus 3

Indianapolis finished the 2012 season in 1st place in the International League West Division with an 89-55 record. They lost 3 games to 1 in the playoffs to Charlotte. Players on their roster to watch this year include the top prospect in the organization, pitcher Gerrit Cole, along with catcher Tony Sanchez, pitchers Kyle McPherson, Phil Irwin, Bryan Morris and Vic Black, infielders Jordy Mercer and Ivan De Jesus Jr. and outfielder Jerry Sands. AA: Altoona (2-1) @ Erie (1-2) 1:35pm
Probable starter: Stolmy Pimentel (6-7, 4.59 last year for Portland)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 6 Erie 3

Altoona finished the 2012 season in 3rd place in the Eastern League Western Division with a 72-70 record. Players on their roster to watch this year include second ranked prospect, pitcher Jameson Taillon, along with infielders Matt Curry and Gift Ngoepe, outfielders Mel Rojas Jr and Alex Dickerson and pitchers Stolmy Pimentel and Casey Sadler. High-A: Bradenton (0-3) VS Ft Myers (3-0) 1:00pm
Probable starter: Adrian Sampson (0-1, 2.95 last year for State College)
Yesterday’s Result: Ft Myers 10 Bradenton 6

Bradenton finished their 2012 season with a 60-77 record, finishing in sixth place in the South Division during the first half of the Florida State League season, and fifth place during the second half. Players on their roster to watch this year include two top prospects, shortstop Alen Hanson and outfielder Gregory Polanco, along with first baseman Jose Osuna, outfielder Willy Garcia and pitchers Nick Kingham, Adrian Sampson and Robby Rowland. Low-A: West Virginia (0-3) VS Asheville (3-0) 2:05pm
Probable starter: John Kuchno (0-1, 9.00 at State College)
Yesterday’s Result: Asheville 4 West Virginia 1

The Power finished their 2012 season with a 61-79 record, ending the first half of the season in last place in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League and in the second half they were tied for second place. Players to watch on their roster this year include, top prospect, outfielder Josh Bell, along with catcher Wyatt Mathisen, infielders Dilson Herrera, Stetson Allie and Max Moroff, and pitchers Clay Holmes, Tyler Glasnow and Joely Rodriguez. Two other highly rated prospects should join the team soon, pitcher Luis Heredia and outfielder Barrett Barnes. A team preview can be viewed here.

John Dreker

John was born in Kearny, NJ, hometown of the 2B for the Pirates 1909 World Championship team, Dots Miller. In fact they have some of the same relatives in common, so it was only natural for him to become a lifelong Pirates fan.
