I guess my point is the upside is marginal, the downside is he is the worst pitcher in the league and desolates our bullpen each outing. One more start? Fair enough, but if it’s like the last one I would imagine you would want to pull the trigger then…

Also, that WAR was lowered due to only 101 innings. He was injured that year, and missed a big part of the season. It’s not like he pitched 180 innings and only had a 0.4 WAR.

So it’s going on 3 years he’s been pretty terrible. It was in ’11 when his BB/9 rate jumped from around 4.5 to nearly 6. It’s not getting better. It was a nice thought, but as soon as he showed that he hasn’t made great strides, the string needs to be cut.

Before that he was a good pitcher for three years. I don’t think you should only consider a bad year where he dealt with injuries, and totally dismiss the good years.

I’m not saying Sanchez is a guarantee to bounce back to those 2009-2011 numbers. But you have to take a chance, and cutting him after the first bad start isn’t taking a chance.

He’s been the worst starting pitcher in the league for over a year now. Quite frankly, I’d rather start Gomez at this point (Did I just say that out loud?). You can’t worry about what if’s down the line. The Pirates have to start having there best possible 25 up. Adding Bryan Morris was an indication they are starting to do this. Getting rid of Sanchez would continue that trend.

Plus, if you move Sanchez to the bullpen, you remove one of your starting options (See my First Pitch on depth).

I feel like if he pitches well, he gets a shot. Also, I was wrong about Gomez. I like him as the long man out of the bullpen. How is it NH has an eye for the bullpen guys? He has taught me to stop questioning his bullpen decisions.

If Irwin pitches “well” today and Wandy is ready by early next week, what are the chances of leaving Irwin in the rotation for now, starting Wandy on Tuesday and sending Sanchez to pen/DFA. Thoughts?
