How have all those guys ended up? You take the best player available. Regardless of position. Regardless of need.

We’ve been drafting pitching for twenty years. When we went after a hitter we got ‘Cutch — not a bad thing, and Alvarez, of course (who knows where that one is going).

The Pirates have a bounty of talented starting pitching, but that didn’t stop them from selected Mark Appel last year. Eventhough they weren’t successful in signing Appel, I still agree with the selection. I hope the Pirates don’t let their failure to sign Appel scared them away from selecting the best player available, otherwise we’ll have another Moskos experience.

At #14, I hope one of the 3 top catchers or a prep slugger like Dominic Smith is available

Seems he has no chance of ever making it to the majors as a hitter. The kid has a unnatural ability to throw hard, so it makes more sense to me to try and develop this skill rather than hoping for a miracle that he will be an average hitter in the majors. He has a slim chance to make it as a reliever, and no chance as a hitter. Don’t the Pirates see this, or would that require someone in the Pirates org to admit they made a huge mistake.

If they show the promise we think they have, then we will probably pass on both Reese McGuire and Denney, unless we want to take a guy like McGuire and put him in as a C/3B with a solid LH bat.. Also, with Alen Hanson, Max Moroff, and Dilson Herrera all in the lower levels of the minors, a middle infielder may not be critical either.
