How useless is a bench spot that has no future potential, no bat and is a defensive back up for a defensive shortstop.

It is really difficult to find a shortstop that can make all the plays and still hit for a high average with power. I would like to see them take J.P.Crawford this year in the draft and I think he might even be there at 14 and he might be a pretty good SS prospect, albeit without a lot of power.
Huntington was asked about Mercer for the future and Huntington said they were playing Mercer at 2nd base and D’Arnaud at SS because D’Arnaud needed more work at the position, but that Mercer figured in their plans, in other words he did not answer the question. He probably is waiting to see how Mercer does this year.
