I think the main thing here is the Pirates infield is above average defensively, but that is a huge improvement from what it was in 2011 or even last season. Also, let us not forget the huge difference at the catcher position. Opponents ran at will on the Pirates last season. I believe they were close to last in the majors in SBs against and SB % against. How many of us expected Martin to to be such an important piece to this team?

First, it’s well established that W/L record for a pitcher is a completely meaningless stat, it reflects nothing of a pitchers performance. You are correct about the K rates, but that being said, his K rate is still better than Locke or Gomez, and it comes along with the same great GB ratios, which means even less regression. You’re right, Cole might be called up (though he’s obviously not ready), but that still leaves either Locke or Gomez in the rotation. I for one would like to see Morton go to the rotation, Gomez to the bullpen. If Morton struggles, then you move Gomez back to the rotation.

throughout the course of a whole season, results were found to be negligible.

I don’t think that says anything about Barmes.

I agree it’s tough to watch Jones on D. But he has saved Barmas at least 10 – 15 extra errors this year. I still believe in the eye test.

Other than Barmes the Bucs don’t have anyone else in the infield that could be considered above average defensively.

So while the Bucs want a strong defense in the infield they don’t have one despite the numbers.

A good thing about average BAIP is that somebody has to be above average and somebody below and it looks like the Bucs have pitchers that can be above average in this category.
