Minor League Schedule: 5/3/13

For Indianapolis, Charlie Morton will get the start, pushing top prospect Gerrit Cole back to tomorrow. Bradenton was rained out yesterday. They will make the game up as part of a doubleheader today. Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 9, Lehigh Valley 6

Gerrit Cole will make his sixth start of the season tomorrow, as he gets pushed back a day so Charlie Morton can make his fourth rehab start. Morton has started twice for Altoona, allowing one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven in ten innings of work.Morton also pitched once for Bradenton, allowing two runs over three innings. For Cole tomorrow, it will be just his second start on the road. In his only other road start, Cole gave up one run on four hits and four walks in 6.1 innings. In his last game, he went seven innings for the first time this year, allowing one run on three hits and four walks. On the year, Cole has thrown 23.1 innings, giving up 17 hits, one home run and 15 walks. He has 19 strikeouts, a 1.24 GO/AO ratio and a .205 BAA. Right-handed batters are hitting just .093 against him.

AA: Altoona (11-16) @ Erie (14-11) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Ethan Hollingsworth (0-1, 4.50)
Yesterday’s Result: Akron 4, Altoona 1

Ethan Hollingsworth will make his first start of the season tonight. He has pitched six times in relief, pitching a high of three innings, three different times. Hollingsworth has pitched a total of 14 innings this year, giving up 15 hits, one home run, three walks and he has nine strikeouts. He has faced Erie twice already this year, allowing one run over five innings. Prior to this season, Hollingsworth had made 91 starts and 30 relief appearances.

High-A: Bradenton (9-17) @ Palm Beach (13-13) 5:05pm DH
Probable starter: Robby Rowland (1-0, 4.76) and Nick Kingham (2-2, 3.04)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton was rained out yesterday

Robby Rowland will make his sixth start of the season tonight. This will be his fifth start on the road, where he has gone 1-0, 4.50 this season. Rowland is coming off a rough outing on Saturday against St Lucie, when he allowed five runs on five hits and three walks in four innings. On the year, he has 17 strikeouts, a 1.35 GO/AO ratio and a .264 BAA in 22.2 innings. Righties are hitting .192 with no homers against him, while left-handed batters are hitting .371 with two homers. Nick Kingham was the scheduled starter for Friday before the rainout, so he will likely pitch today, though that will mean that Bradenton will need an extra starter at some point during the next time through the rotation. Zack Dodson is set to return, so he could be that person. Kingham is coming off a 13 strikeout game on Sunday. In 26.2 innings, he has issued just four walks, while recording 33 strikeouts.

Low-A: West Virginia (11-16) VS Greensboro (12-13) 10:30am
Probable starter: Orlando Castro (2-2, 1.67)
Yesterday’s Result:  Greensboro 8, West Virginia 1

Orlando Castro will get his sixth start of the season today. He has pitched a total of 27 innings, giving up 23 hits, one home run, one walk and he has 22 strikeouts. Castro has a .235 BAA and a 1.52 GO/AO ratio. Right-handed batters are hitting .215 against him. At home this year, he has a 3.18 ERA, as opposed to a 0.57 ERA in his road starts. In his last game, he picked up the loss while allowing just one run on six hits and no walks in 6.2 innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
