Francisco Liriano has been activated for his start today.

As expected, the Pittsburgh Pirates have activated left-hander Francisco Liriano from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, they have optioned Duke Welker to Triple-A. Welker was recalled earlier this week to add some bullpen depth after Jeanmar Gomez joined the rotation, but didn’t make an appearance.

Liriano will be starting this afternoon for the Pirates.

I think it’s pretty lame that Welker wasn’t given a chance. The 9th last night would’ve been perfect. At least he got a chance to sit around for a week and rest before going back and continuing to have little to prove in AAA.

He briefly enjoyed a pay increase and major league perks. So, all was not for nothing for the Duke.
