I was rather negative during spring training because I didn’t see our pitching being so strong and deep but with what we’ve already seen and with Morton and Karstens still in the fold and soon ready to help if/when needed I’m now very positive. Also, I think getting Contreras was huge for the pen. If Liriano can pitch reasonably well like today then look out NL Central.

Unfortunately the Pirates are so in love with Clint Barmes they will probably be retiring his number some day.

The Bucs spent most of May and June playing bad teams, and beat up on them pretty well. Once the ASG came and went, the schedule got tougher and the results reflected that.

The collapse in 2012 was a function of the pitching staff. Bedard imploded and was released, McDonald fell apart after the ASG, and Correia was banished to the bullpen in favor of young options who for the most part didn’t pitch well. The offense slumped when Walker went out with his bad back, and the bullpen inividually and collectively ran out of gas.

This year’s team appears to have a lot more depth in all areas. Indy and the DL can provide Karstens, Morton, and Cole if a starter falters, (and maybe Andy Oliver too). For the pen, Jared Hughes and Duke Welker look like viable options, as well as Kris Johnson. Alex Presley and Josh Harrison provide lineup depth, and as you note, right now Marte, Mercer, Tabata, and Snider are delivering at the plate and in the field.

I’m terribly optimistic that this team can erase the sour taste of the past 20 years.
