In fact, this time last year he didn’t have an official pro AB yet and was playing 3B in Extended Spring Training. The usual step with someone inexperienced, is give them a full season at one level.
They have Jose Osuna at 1b in Bradenton, twenty years old and he started as a pitcher, just like Allie. Both need time in defensively at 1b and there is no way you can move Osuna up to AA to make room for Allie

I was really hoping to see him this year but it’s looking more and more like he needs to work on his mechanics/mental approach. I would say Taillon definitely has surpassed him as the top pitching prospect. Also, should we promote Allie to high A? He is crushing low A pitching, lets see what he can do.

Waiting until June makes him cheaper over that time, avoiding Super Two status, which is what everyone assumed the Pirates would do. The way he has pitched though, has made that decision seem smart/easy. He still needs to show more at AAA, definitely not ready and no reason to rush him at this point. His stuff is way too good to not have at least one high strikeout game this year, so there is work to be done

Who would he replace? IMHO he’s right where he needs to be. He was disappointed that he didn’t make the team out of Spring Training, and it has been documented that he has issues controlling his emotions on the mound. Sounds like he needs to get his mind right. If he can do that , things should fall into place for him. Until then, I don’t see a place for him given the overall performance of the Pirate’s pitching staff.

Cole could benefit greatly from working with Martin, and also serve an “apprenticeship” under veteran leaders such as AJ Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez, Francisco Liriano, and the daily input from Ray Searage. This is a great opportunity for both the Pirates and Gerrit Cole. It would be nice thinking about a 2014 that could include Locke, Cole, and Taillon. If the Pirates wait until June to promote Cole, he would not be able to achieve a service year under MLB rules, so it is a freebie of which the Bucs must take advantage.

However, especially considering Huntington’s comments about Cole going heavy on his secondary offerings, is he a guy that could potentially benefit from a veteran catcher (Russell Martin, for instance) calling a game?

ESPECIALLY if he rakes all the way to the majors.
