I honestly think he could be the best player in the draft. At his age, he’s got similar physicality to Bryce Harper minus the power at the same age and the arm. McGuire is a pick I can’t complain that much about but I would have gone another direction because we have a few other decent young catching prospects. JP Crawford would have been nice or any one of the few good college pitchers that were still out there. I don’t have a problem with Taylor…especially if they can get him cheap and give them flexibility with other picks. I know, they should be picking best available…but with the new rules teams need to be creative too. Taylor’s velocity and body are good…I think of Justin Wilson when I see his velo and his big/strong lower half. He may not have been the ideal pick but he was still a solid one. When you can get a 17 year old lefty that can touch 95, you did ok.

Tony Sanchez just turned 25 and everyone seems to forget he missed half a season with an eye/head injury and then was rushed a level with not much experience. …so developmentally as far as catchers go, he is where he needs to be. catchers have so much more than the average player to work on…it takes time. John hart should know that.

In five years, I think we’ll compare McGuire and Taylor to Kaminsky and Mercado, both available when we picked and both taken by the Cards, and despair.

According to baseball analyst Sky Andrecheck, now with the Indians, high school hitters end up with a higher average WAR than college pitchers.

Neither is a sure thing, and you draft based on individuals, but we shouldn’t overstate the risk the Pirates took here.

Love the upside of Meadows, and love that McGuire can stick at C.

By the way, this is the proper comparison to make. I’ve seen so many “Appel vs Meadows”. But really it should be Dahl vs Meadows, since we know there was zero chance for Appel to sign. They took the risk, didn’t get Appel, and ended up getting a guy who had comparable talent.

I was resigned to McGuire at 9 so in my mind it was almost as if Meadows slipped to 14.

I think that’s kind of lousy homework to say a guys not working out when he’s doing really well in AAA and could have a shot to be a solid everyday catcher. That being said we know that like the back of our hands because we’re big Pirates fans but for Peter Gammons, who wasn’t necessarily put on the spot because everyone and their mother knew the Pirates wanted McGuire, I thought it was more of an oversight than a huge mistake. I would’ve preferred they say that Sanchez hasn’t moved up as quickly as expected rather than pretty much writing him off which is kind of what they did but what can you do.
