Minor League Schedule: Dickson and Holmes Headline Sunday’s Games

Five teams on the schedule today, four of the games are early afternoon starts. The GCL Pirates and both Dominican Summer League affiliates are off today. They will all resume play tomorrow. AAA: Indianapolis (55-29) vs Louisville (40-43) 1:35pm
Probable starter:   Kris Johnson (7-3, 2.80)
Yesterday’s Result:  Indianapolis 5, Louisville 3

Kris Johnson will make his 13th start of the season today. He has also pitched five times in relief. He has pitched 80.1 innings, giving up 71 hits, four homers and 29 walks. Johnson has 58 strikeouts, a 1.46 GO/AO ratio and a .239 BAA. In his last start, he threw seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. At home he is 3-1, 1.88 in 38.1 innings.

AA: Altoona (35-45) @ Akron (38-42) 2:05pm
Probable starter:  Casey Sadler (7-5, 3.28)
Yesterday’s Result: Akron 7, Altoona 6 (game one) Altoona 7, Akron 0 (game two)

Casey Sadler will make his 17th start of the season today. In 96 innings, he has given up 89 hits, eight homers and 25 walks. He has 54 strikeouts, a 1.73 GO/AO ratio and a .251 BAA. He lasted just two innings in his last start, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk. The game was suspended after two innings due to rain. Sadler is 2-2, 3.81 in five June starts. On the road, he is 5-0, 2.42 in seven starts.

High-A: Bradenton (31-47 overall, 5-5 2nd half) vs Palm Beach (35-43) 5:00pm
Probable starter:   Zack Dodson (1-5, 5.04)
Yesterday’s Result: Palm Beach 5, Bradenton 0

Zack Dodson will make his tenth start of the season today. He has also pitched once in relief. He went six innings in his last outing, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks. Dodson has had trouble striking out batters recently, picking up just eight strikeouts in his last six outings combined. At home this year in five starts, he is 1-2, 5.13 in 26.1 innings. He had a 3.45 ERA in May and in five June games, he has a 7.17 ERA.

Low-A: West Virginia (44-36 overall, 7-3 2nd half) @ Lakewood (29-48) 1:05pm
Probable starter: Clay Holmes (2-5, 5.08)

Clay Holmes will make his 16th start of the season today. He has pitched 67.1 innings this year, giving up 64 hits, five homers and 47 walks. Holmes has 44 strikeouts, a 1.79 GO/AO ratio and a .257 BAA. He has had two recent starts against Lakewood this month, with vastly different results. In the first game in Lakewood, he threw five shutout innings, giving up just one hit. In the second meeting last week, he gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. On the road this year, Holmes is 2-1, 3.33 in five starts.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (6-5) vs Auburn (5-7) 1:05pm
Probable Starter:  Cody Dickson (0-0, 0.00)
Yesterday’s Result: Auburn 8, Jamestown 5

Cody Dickson will make the third start of his pro career. In his first game, he threw three no-hit innings, allowing one walk, while striking out six batters. His next outing was cut short by rain and the game doesn’t count yet in the official stats. Dickson gave up two runs in the first, the only inning he pitched. He was the fourth round pick in the 2013 amateur draft for the Pirates. Dickson is a 21-year-old 6’3″ lefty, who went 9-5, 4.26 in 95 innings for Sam Houston State this season. He held batters to a .185 BAA and struck out 91, but also issued 51 walks.

Probable Starter: Cesilio Pimentel (0-0, 3.38)
Yesterday’s Result: Pirates 6, Astros 2

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
