Minor League Schedule: Heredia Makes Season Debut, Rodriguez On Rehab

Big day today, as 18-year-old Luis Heredia makes his debut in full-season ball. Also, Wandy Rodriguez pitches in Indianapolis, attempting to return from a forearm injury that sidelined him just over two weeks ago. The GCL Pirates and both DSL teams are off today. Probable starter: Wandy Rodriguez (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 7, Charlotte 1

Wandy Rodriguez will make his first rehab start as he tries to return from left forearm tightness. He threw 40 pitches during a bullpen session on Thursday. In his last start on June 5th, Rodriguez lasted just four batters against the Braves before leaving the game. He is 6-4, 3.39 this year in 12 starts for the Pirates.

AA: Altoona (34-38) @ Bowie (34-36) 2:05pm
Probable starter: David Bromberg (3-6, 3.27)
Yesterday’s Result: Bowie 10, Altoona 9

David Bromberg will make his tenth start of the season. He has also pitched five times in relief. As a starter, he is 2-5, 2.81 in 51.1 innings, with 51 strikeouts and a .247 BAA. In his last two starts combined, Bromberg has given up one run over 13 innings, while striking out 19 batters. He has a higher road ERA(3.42 vs 3.18), but in 26.1 road innings, he has given up just one homer and held batters to a .237 average.

High-A: Bradenton (28-43 overall, 2-1 2nd half) @ St Lucie (39-31) 4:00pm
Probable starter: Adrian Sampson (2-3, 5.56)

Adrian Sampson will make his 13th start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. Sampson has pitched a total of 66.1 innings this season, allowing 87 hits, 11 homers and 12 walks. He has 37 strikeouts, a 1.17 GO/AO ratio and a .318 BAA. On the road this season, he is 1-1, 4.81 in 20.1 innings. In his last start, Sampson went six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, no walks and he struck out five batters.

Low-A: West Virginia (39-34 overall, 2-1 2nd half) vs Lakewood (27-43) 2:05pm

Luis Heredia will make his first start of the season tonight. He has been in Extended Spring Training up until now. Heredia spent last season with State College, where he was 4-2, 2.71 in 14 starts. He pitched 66.1 innings, allowing 53 hits, two homers and twenty walks. Heredia had 40 strikeouts, a 1.52 GO/AO ratio and a .224 BAA. He spent all of 2011 in the GCL, where he went 1-2, 4.75 in 12 games, 11 as a starter.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (4-2) @ State College (4-2) 6:05pm
Probable Starter: Colten Brewer (1-0, 0.00)
Yesterday’s Result: Williamsport 10, Jamestown 4

Colten Brewer will make his second start of the season for Jamestown tonight.  In his first start, he threw five shutout innings, allowing five hits, one walk and he struck out two batters. He spent last year in the Gulf Coast League, where he went 1-3, 3.24 in six starts and two relief appearances. Brewer pitched a total of 25 innings, allowing 24 hits, three homers and nine walks. He had 18 strikeouts, a 1.57 GO/AO ratio and a .250 BAA. John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
