Minor League Schedule: Kingham Likely To Make Altoona Debut Tonight

Three teams going today in full-season ball and all three have unscheduled pitchers going due to two promotions and a string of doubleheaders in West Virginia. Bradenton is on their All-Star break. AAA: Indianapolis (46-23) @ Durham (42-26) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Kris Johnson (5-3, 3.23)
Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis 6, Durham 4 in 10 innings

Kris Johnson will make his tenth start of the season tonight. He has also pitched in relief five times. As a starter, Johnson is 5-2, 2.84 in 50.2 innings, with a .228 BAA. His last appearance was in relief, four days ago when he threw three no-hit innings. In his last start, he gave up two runs over seven innings on May 30th against Pawtucket. Johnson threw two scoreless innings against Durham ten days ago. He is holding left-handed batters to a .216 average, with no homers this season. He is taking the spot of Brandon Cumpton, who was promoted to the majors.

AA: Altoona (28-37) vs Trenton (33-33) 6:00pm
Probable starter: Nick Kingham (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 8, Trenton 4

Altoona has yet to announce a starter for today’s game, but Nick Kingham will likely make his AA debut today. He still has to be added to the Curve roster. Kingham pitched 13 times for Bradenton, going 6-3, 3.09 in 70 innings, with 55 hits allowed, six homers and 14 walks. He has 75 strikeouts and a .212 BAA. At the time of his promotion, he was the Florida State League leader in strikeouts. In his last start five days ago, he got in just three innings before rained postponed the finish of the game.

High-A: Bradenton (26-39) @ Jupiter (33-32) 6:35pm 6/17

Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton is on their All-Star break

The Marauders are now on their All-Star break. They are in last place in their division, 17.5 games behind first place Fort Myers. When they return to action on Monday, they will play three games on the road against Jupiter, three at home against Charlotte and then go back on the road for six games. They will play 17 straight days without a day off. As of right now, Alen Hanson will be the team’s only representative in the All-Star game. Both Gregory Polanco and Nick Kingham were selected, but they have been promoted to Altoona.

Low-A: West Virginia (36-32) @ Greensboro (32-35) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Pat Ludwig (4-0, 2.17)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 6, Greensboro 3 in 12 innings

Pat Ludwig will make his first professional start today after making 38 straight relief appearances since being drafted last year. This season he has pitched twenty times in relief, throwing a total of 37.1 innings. He has allowed 30 hits, two homers and 12 walks, while striking out 35 batters. Ludwig has a 1.24 GO/AO ratio and a .221 BAA. Left-handed batters are hitting just .181 against him. On May 22nd, he threw four innings and in each of his last two appearances, he has gone three innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
