Here are some injury updates on some of the Pirates major leaguers. The first two come via Rob Biertempfel and Michael Sanserino on Twitter.

**Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) and James McDonald (shoulder) are expected to begin throwing next week. It’s possible that both could return by September when rosters expand, although I don’t see either returning before that point if they’re just starting to throw in late-July.

**Kyle McPherson had Tommy John surgery on July 10th. Normally it takes about a year for a player to return to the majors from that procedure. I wouldn’t expect McPherson to pitch until next June.

**Neil Walker started his rehab assignment with Indianapolis last night. He’s eligible to come off the DL on Monday, and is expected to return on that date.

**Jared Hughes had his rehab transferred to Indianapolis, which means he will probably be throwing tonight.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it would’ve been better to have done McPherson’s Tommy John a few months ago.

Apparently the current medical state of the art is to use PRP injections first to see if they can promote healing. This was apparently done with Wandy and JMac as well, so we may well have gone 2 for 3. Seems like a good deal if that’s the case.

IIRC, wasn’t McPherson’s problems with his shoulder?

Tim, 3 weeks ago, when Wandy was shut down (for a planned 3 weeks), NH said on his radio show that it would not take as long for him to build back up as it would for a guy that hadn’t already been pitching. He specifically compared the Liriano situation saying that since Wandy had already been at full strength it would be a shorter process. I still think August is is play for him if he can make a rehab start by the end of the month, he may only need 3 such starts which could be accomplished by mid-August.

I believe Jared Hughes is out of oprtions. So when he is finally ready, will they recall him, and whom will they cut/send down? Having too many good relievers is a great thing, but at some point you have to cut a couple of them loose. Hughes has nice stuff, but can he get back to where he was?
