We’ve seen the Pirates struggle to find their franchise catcher (or even a solid catcher year to year) after Kendall left (or Pirates let him go depending on your perspective). Paulino had issues, Santiago was too old, Doumit could hit but not catch, Walker changed positions, J.R. House was a bust, Snyder was always hurt and Barajas couldn’t do anything.
.
Hopefully one of these guys develop and solidify the position for several years.

I wanted him badly at 9 until I saw Austin Meadows still there at 9. I new they would choose Meadows, IMO he had the highest upside of any bat in the draft Seriously this guy could turn into the next young phenom. Then at 14 Shipley was still there. I couldn’t stand the idea of passing over a third huge upside power along with Cole and Taillon, Shipley could have been in our rotation shortly after Taillon. Also I though the Pirates wanted yet another top of the rotation starter because they wanted to sign Appel last year. I thought it was a mistake taking McGuire, 1st because I believe heavily in Wyatt Mathesin and 2 because the scouts I talked to said they weren’t sure he was the best prep catcher in the draft. but I think If Reese McGuire is as good as advertised the might move Mathesin to 3B or corner OF. I was wrong on McGuire and i’m glad they got him

I’m just glad NH stuck with his board and didn’t mind taking a second high school position player.

Pretty unusual stats. Hopefully he can put it together on offense. He has good power for second baseman.

This is not a shot at Meadows, glad to have them both. However, McGuire was the guy the Pirates wanted & glad they have him!

We ranked him high because we believed in the bat, so he’s showing good signs of backing that opinion up. However, that only justifies the rankings.

.
McGuire has been really impressive. He’s seeing the ball really well, has great plate patience, and he seems to be solid behind the plate too with throwing out runners. Didn’t I read here (at PiratesProspects) that McGuire’s game calling ability is slightly more advanced than a typical high school draft pick?
.
Maybe McGuire doesn’t like that he’s only ranked 9th in your top prospects list Tim? He’s making a case to be #1 heh.
