Have Frazier play a series at 2B then a series at SS. Have Jones play a series at CF then a series at SS.

At LSU, it does not appear that he played all over the infield. I checked over 60 of their box scores – from all three of his seasons – and he was at 2B in all 60 games. And they had at least two different starting SS’s over those seasons, including a freshman who took over at SS in 2013.

The fact that he was only used at 2B in college makes it hard for me to believe he is really a candidate to play SS at a higher level. Having said that, if they want to try it, it can’t hurt. Except that it suggests that they don’t see Frazier as being a serious higher-level SS candidate since it appears – based on his college play – that his bat is not good enough for any other position.

Jones being such a great athlete, it really boils down to which he is most comfortable at, and maybe, eventually which position the Pirates will have a need at. Exciting to see these two kids not at all intimidated playing professional baseball for the first time.

In high school he was a wide receiver and strong safety. He’s also played all over the infield at LSU. I’m not sure who their shortstop was, and how good that option was compared to Jones.

For now I’d say this is like putting your best arm in the rotation, even if he profiles as a reliever. In this case, Jones is the most athletic on the team. He might not profile as a shortstop in the long run, but there’s more value putting him there and hoping he does well in the position, as opposed to keeping him at second, which is a position he’s already comfortable with.

One guy is still developing, and one guy has only played one game and I’ve never seen him play the position.

As far as I can tell, he didn’t play an inning at SS for LSU in three seasons. If they didnt’ view him as a SS, is there any reason to think he is a potential SS at a higher pro level?

You have Jones, Hanson, and Mercer as your primary infielders. How do you line them up defensively?
