The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up Felix Pie and have added him to tonight’s lineup, batting leadoff and playing left-field. Ryan Reid is expected to be optioned to make room for Pie on the 25-man roster. No word on the 40-man roster move, which needs to be made since Pie isn’t currently on the 40-man. More to come as information becomes available.

UPDATE 3:50 PM: Pie doesn’t have the best numbers with Indianapolis this year. He’s hitting for a .250/.325/.390 line in 354 at-bats. He does have 38 stolen bases in 47 attempts, and is on a hot streak recently with a .344/.364/.469 line in 32 at-bats over his last ten games. He’s replacing Starling Marte in the lineup. Alex Presley and Andrew Lambo aren’t eligible to be recalled yet, since they were both optioned within ten days. That indicates that Marte won’t go on the DL, otherwise either one could be recalled.

UPDATE 4:27 PM: James Santelli, who is in San Diego, reports that Jose Tabata has left knee tendinitis.

With Tabata and Marte down for tonight, that explains the need for Pie.

UPDATE 4:32 PM: Pie has been officially called up. As expected, Reid has been optioned. Wandy Rodriguez has been transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Pie on the 40-man roster. The move to the 60-day DL is only to create a roster spot. Rodriguez can return whenever he is healthy since he has spent longer than 60 days on the disabled list.

Im sure youll edit but as it reads Ryan Reid will start tonight in the line-up and also be optioned lol mistakes happen

Yeah, I caught that when I was updating the article with Pie’s numbers.

Surely if everybody is healthy in a couple weeks when September comes we won’t have Presley, Lambo and Pie on the active roster. Who will stay on the roster in September?

    • http://battlingbucs.wordpress.com battlingbucs

Don’t forget Snider in that equation.

  • smurph

The issue becomes, who remains on the 40-man when people get healthy. Good chance Pie would be DFA if a roster spot is needed, unless he tears it up with this chance he is given.

    • smurph

Canzler or Sands would be other options. Sands hasn’t performed, but maybe they give him another year at AAA.

  • CalipariFan506

Pie will be DFAd when Lambo is eligible in a week is my guess. Or maybe even Friday for Presley.

So Wandy is done for the season then? Any player placed on the 60 day DL after August 1st is not eligible for the postseason.

    • http://www.piratesprospects.com Tim Williams

No, he’s not done for the season. He can be brought back at any time.

      • https://profiles.google.com/108909932242194951621 dmbase

But he can’t pitch in the postseason now. At least that’s how I understand it. Unless there are exceptions for retroactive moves?

        • James Santelli

Wandy absolutely can pitch in the postseason, even if he is still on the disabled list after August 31.

  • CalipariFan506

I think after tomorrow Wandy will be shut down anyways. Hope not though.

Tim will you do a story covering all the loop holes and such pertaining to the playoff roster. You know this is the first year most of us had to worry about such a thing. Thanks in advance.

      James will have one soon.
