Minor League Schedule: Rodriguez and Taillon Attempt to Keep Indianapolis in Playoffs

The minor league season is done for all but three of the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliates. Indianapolis lost game two last night, putting them one loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs. West Virginia lost game one on Wednesday, then had off yesterday. They are also facing a must win game today. Jamestown won the NYPL Wildcard spot and will go up against the Pirates affiliate from last year, State College. That series begins today. AAA: Indianapolis (80-64) vs Durham (87-57) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Wandy Rodriguez (0-0, 2.25)
Yesterday’s Result: Durham 6, Indianapolis 5

Indianapolis lost game two of their best-of-five series against Durham last night, putting them one game away from elimination. In game three tonight, they will go with Wandy Rodriguez making a rehab start. He will be followed by Jameson Taillon, who went 1-3, 3.89 in six AAA starts. Rodriguez made one rehab start for Indianapolis on June 23rd and gave up one run on four hits and one walk, with five strikeouts in four innings. He has not pitched since then. Taillon gave up three runs over six innings in his last start. He has 37 strikeouts in 37 innings for Indianapolis this year.

AA: Altoona (63-79)
Yesterday’s Result: Season Complete

The Altoona Curve season is over. They finished in last place in their division, 14 games out of first place.  Justin Howard led the team with a .314 BA. Jarek Cunningham led with 19 homers and Alex Dickerson was the leader with 68 RBI’s. Adalberto Santos topped the team with 21 steals and 62 runs scored. On the pitching side, Casey Sadler led with 11 wins. Nick Kingham had the best ERA at 2.70 in 73.1 innings. David Bromberg led with 136 innings pitched and 127 strikeouts. Luis Sanz was first with 16 saves.

High-A: Bradenton (57-77 overall, 31-35 2nd half)
Yesterday’s Result: Season Complete

The Bradenton Marauders season is over. They finished seven games back for the second half title and 21.5 games back in the overall standings. Alen Hanson led the team with a .281 batting average among regulars. Willy Garcia led the team with 16 homers and 60 RBI’s. Benji Gonzalez led with 27 steals. Hanson and Gregory Polanco each had 24 stolen bases. Nick Kingham and Zack Dodson led with six wins among pitchers. Adrian Sampson led with 85 strikeouts and 140 innings pitched.

Low-A: West Virginia (81-58 overall, 44-25 2nd half)  @ Hagerstown (80-57) 7:05pm
Probable starter: John Kuchno (95-, 4.01)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia was off yesterday

West Virginia lost game one of their best-of-three series to Hagerstown Wednesday night. The series now switches to Hagerstown for game two and if necessary, game three. John Kuchno will be on the mound tonight. He made 22 starts and two relief appearances during the season, throwing a total of 123.1 innings. He allowed 124 hits, seven homers and 45 walks. Kuchno had 89 strikeouts, a 2.29 GO/AO ratio and a .266 BAA. He faced Hagerstown on July 1st, allowing five runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings. Kuchno also faced them in his previous start, allowing three runs over five innings.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (42-32) vs State College (48-26) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Buddy Borden (0-0, 1.08)
Yesterday’s Result:  Jamestown 9, State College 4

Jamestown clinched the Wildcard spot on the last day of the season and by doing that, they will remain at home and take on State College on Friday night. The two teams will meet in a best-of-three series, with the last two games played on the road. During the regular season, State College dominated the series, going 8-2, with eight straight wins. The starting pitcher will be Buddy Borden making his fourth start of the season. He also made three relief appearances. Borden pitched five innings in his last start, allowing one run on four hits. In his first two starts combined, he threw seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, hometown of the 2B for the Pirates 1909 World Championship team, Dots Miller. In fact they have some of the same relatives in common, so it was only natural for him to become a lifelong Pirates fan.
