Gregory Polanco played center field on Friday night

Your Latest “Gregory Polanco is Really Good” Update

Gregory Polanco has had a big off-season in the Dominican Winter Leagues. Now he’s having a huge series in the Dominican League finals. On Monday he showed off his plus speed, beating out a grounder to the second baseman. Forbes to Federal was able to find the video, so you can see just how fast Polanco really is. When I first imagined the play, I imagined something where the second baseman didn’t field the ball cleanly, or had to range to make a tough play. This hit included a high chop, but was right at the second baseman, fielded cleanly, and included a quick release. And Polanco still beat the throw.

As John Dreker wrote in his Winter League update this morning, Polanco followed that with a big home run last night. Imo Kemp provided the following GIF of the monster home run on Twitter.

It’s easy to see why Polanco is the number one prospect in the system, and was given a 3.2 WAR projection by ZiPS, which is typically conservative on prospect predictions.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2014 Top Prospects: #8 – Josh Bell

Waiting for this guy to come up is going to be like a child waiting for Christmas…

At least with Cole last year there wasn’t a gaping hole at his position. Nor was he tearing it up like this.

Any chance of a Longoria type extension so that he can be up on Opening Day? I would love to see that swing in PNC Park 2-3 months earlier than expected.

        Interesting thought.

Where oh where do we put Meadows or Bell?
Problems, Problems, Problems, so many problems.

    • meatygettingsaucy

Bell probably going to 1B. Meadows, way to early to start talking about his future position

Oh man! I can’t wait to see him in Pittsburgh!!!

  • RonLoreski

Considering how much depth the Pirates have in OF prospects, I wonder if that increases the chances of Polanco making the Opening Day roster. With Meadows, Bell, Ramirez, Jones, and Barnes all up and coming, will waiting 3 months to buy an extra year of free agency really worth it?

I’d say if he tears it up this spring, let him play and DFA Snider. That makes Tabata a very valuable 4th OF.

    • meatygettingsaucy

2 months of Polanco at his age 22 season is not nearly worth as much as Polanco for an extra year in his prime. Not even close. Everyone be patient

      • leefoo

But, by then will he be too expensive?

Look at what Mike Trout is gonna get.

        • Mr. Goodkat

That would be a fantastic problem to have — that means his trade value would be through the roof.

They would either pony up the cash or trade him for a massive haul.

His swing reminds me a bit of Ortiz with that follow through. Can’t get enough of these videos!
