Jason Grilli Placed on the Disabled List

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed right-handed pitcher Jason Grilli on the 15-day disabled list, retro to April 21st, with a left oblique strain. Jared Hughes has been recalled from Indianapolis to replace Grilli on the roster.

With Grilli on the disabled list, Mark Melancon should take over as the team’s closer. Grilli blew two saves over the weekend, and hasn’t pitched since the second blown save.

Prospect Watch: Tyler Glasnow Strikes Out Six in Five Shutout Innings in Debut

Any thoughts as to whether the last 2 poor outings were tied to the oblique strain ? I don’t think so, as both mistakes seemed more due to location , and Grilli didn’t show any signs of being hurt.

Not when there is a injury.

      • bucsws2014

Grilli’s injury was backdated to to 4/21. Hughes was already on the ML roster for part of that time. Thus he was ineligible to be added and they’ll have to bring up somebody else for today, or push Grilli’s date forward to whatever date it was that Hughes rejoined Indy earlier this week.
