Minor League Schedule: Adrian Sampson Tries to Continue Breakout Season

Adrian Sampson gets the start for Altoona today, trying to continue his strong start to the season. He has shown a great improvement over last year when he pitched for Bradenton and gave up 177 hits, the highest total in the Pirates system. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. Jake Brigham will get his sixth start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 28.1 innings, allowing 24 hits, two homers and 11 walks. He has 29 strikeouts, an 0.74 GO/AO ratio and a .224 BAA. In his last start, Brigham went seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks. In three road starts, he has a 1.89 ERA over 19 innings.

He has allowed two runs or less in each start, although he has also failed to get through five full innings in each of his last two outings. On the year, Sampson has pitched 29.1 innings, allowing 23 hits, one homer and ten walks. He has 26 strikeouts, a 1.11 GO/AO ratio and a .221 BAA. This will be his third consecutive start against Akron

John Kuchno will make his seventh start of the season tonight. He has pitched a total of 26.1 innings, allowing 25 hits, no homers and 12 walks. He has 13 strikeouts, an impressive 2.88 GO/AO ratio and a .250 BAA. He has pitched against Charlotte twice already with drastically different results. Kuchno threw five no-hit innings in his first game against Charlotte, then in the second game, he lasted just 1.2 innings. He gave up two runs on four hits and a walk. Kuchno is holding left-handed batters to a .176 average.

Low-A: West Virginia (11-21) vs Savannah (20-9) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Dovydas Neverauskas (2-1, 5.32)
Yesterday’s Result: Savannah 9, West Virginia 3

Dovydas Neverauskas will make his sixth start of the season tonight. In his last outing, he went five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks. In his previous outing, Neverauskas allowed season-highs in hits with 11 and runs with seven(six earned). He has pitched a total of 22 innings, allowing 33 hits, two homers and ten walks. Neverauskas has 17 strikeouts, a 1.10 GO/AO ratio and a .355 BAA.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
