Minor League Schedule: Nick Kingham Headlines Light Wednesday

A very light day on the schedule today and both games have morning start times. Altoona will have Nick Kingham on the mound today, trying to regain the control he’s had in the past that made him one of the top prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates system. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. Yesterday’s Result: Indianapolis  4, Gwinnett 2

Indianapolis has off today. When they resume play on Thursday, they will begin a four game series on the road in Charlotte. The two teams will meet again in July for four games in Indianapolis. The Indians are in first place in their division, with a 3.5 game lead over Columbus. Indianapolis is 14-12 away from home and they have a 7-3 record in their last ten games.

AA: Altoona (17-26) vs Akron (29-15) 10:30am
Probable starter: Nick Kingham (1-4, 3.35)
Yesterday’s Result: Akron 1, Altoona 0

Nick Kingham will make his ninth start of the season today. He has pitched a total of 43 innings, allowing 43 hits, no homers and 21 walks. Kingham has 35 strikeouts, an 0.94 GO/AO ratio and a .257 BAA. In his last start, he went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks, which was a season high for base on balls. This will be the third time that Kingham has faced Akron. In the other two, he allowed two earned runs in each game, going five innings once and six frames in the other game.

High-A: Bradenton (21-24) vs Daytona (15-26) 10:30am
Probable starter: Jason Creasy (2-2, 4.12)

Jason Creasy will make his tenth start of the season today, the first Pirates minor league starter to reach that mark. Creasy has been hit hard in each of his last two outings, giving up five runs in each game. Prior to that, he gave up a combined ten runs in his first seven starts. Creasy has thrown a total of 39.1 innings, allowing 41 hits, three homers and ten walks. He has 26 strikeouts, a 1.07 GO/AO ratio and a .272 BAA. He is holding left-handed batters to a .229 average with no homers.

Low-A: West Virginia (15-30) vs Lakewood (17-26) 7:05pm 5/22
Probable starter: Cody Dickson (2-5, 4.70)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 4, Delmarva 1

West Virginia has off today. When they resume play on Thursday, they will face Lakewood for the first time this season. The two teams will play a four game series. This is the first of 15 games between them, with 11 games being played in West Virginia. Cody Dickson will be on the mound on Thursday, making his ninth start of the season. The Power are in last place in their division, just behind Lakewood. West Virginia has a 5-16 home record this season.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
