Wandy Rodriguez Placed on Unconditional Release Waivers

Published:

Wandy Rodriguez has been placed on unconditional release waivers, the Pittsburgh Pirates have announced. This essentially cuts ties with Rodriguez, who will be released after he clears waivers.

The Pirates designated Rodriguez for assignment last week, replacing him in the rotation with Brandon Cumpton. His numbers were poor, with a 6.75 ERA, and his velocity was down. He also struggled during two rehab starts in Altoona.

The Pirates are on the hook for Rodriguez’s full salary this year, minus the $5.5 M paid by the Houston Astros. That makes their share $7.5 M.
