Minor League Schedule: Luis Heredia Headlines Busy Saturday

Nine games on the schedule today, with all eight Pirates affiliates going and Altoona will play their second straight doubleheader against Portland. Check out the Prospect Watch from last night. AAA: Indianapolis (43-31) @ Norfolk (30-44) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Adam Wilk (5-5, 4.56)
Yesterday’s Result: Norfolk 2,  Indianapolis 1

Adam Wilk will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. Wilk has thrown a total of 79 innings, giving up 83 hits, ten homers and 23 walks. He has 56 strikeouts, an 0.83 GO/AO ratio and a .277 BAA. In his last start, Wilk gave up three runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings. He threw seven innings against Norfolk on 5/10 and allowed one earned run over seven innings.

AA: Altoona (26-45) @ Portland (47-25) 5:00pm DH
Probable starter: Joely Rodriguez (3-5, 4.22) and Matt Benedict (0-4, 8.35)
Yesterday’s Result: Portland 4, Altoona 2 (game one) Portland 3, Altoona 0 (game two)

Joely Rodriguez will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has pitched 70.1 innings, allowing 75 hits, three homers and 20 walks. He has 36 strikeouts, a 1.66 GO/AO ratio and a .278 BAA. In his last start, Rodriguez allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over seven innings. He faced Portland in his previous outing and gave up five runs on ten hits and a walk in six innings. Matt Benedict will start the second game. He has pitched 32.1 innings this year, all in relief. Benedict threw two shutout innings against Portland on June 10th. He has a .338 BAA, 1.95 WHIP and a 1.88 GO/AO ratio.

High-A: Bradenton (37-34, 2-0 2nd half) @ Jupiter (27-44) 5:35pm
Probable starter: Chad Kuhl (7-5, 4.11)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton 1, Jupiter 0

Chad Kuhl will make his 15th start of the season tonight. He has pitched 76.2 innings, allowing 80 hits, five homers and 14 walks. Kuhl has 53 strikeouts, a .178 GO/AO ratio and a .272 BAA. He posted a 3.09 ERA in five April starts, then followed that up with a 4.79 May ERA. This month in three starts, he has a 4.08 ERA over 17.2 innings. In 158 at-bats against right-handed batters, Kuhl has issued just three walks.

Low-A: West Virginia (22-48, 2-0 2nd half) @ Lakewood (27-44) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Luis Heredia (0-2, 4.82)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 4, Lakewood 2

Luis Heredia will make his sixth start of the season tonight. In his last outing, he gave up just one run on four hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. Heredia pitched 4.2 innings in his previous game, allowing five runs, though all of them were unearned. In 18.2 innings this year, he has allowed 12 walks, struck out 12 batters and given up two homers. He has a 1.20 GO/AO ratio and a .239 BAA. Heredia missed a month of the season with shoulder soreness.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (2-6) vs State College (5-3) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Alex McRae (0-0, 0.00)
Yesterday’s Result: State College 5, Jamestown 3 in 10 innings

Alex McRae will make his second start of the season. He was drafted in the tenth round this year out of Jacksonville University. McRae pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in his debut, giving up two hits, no walks and he struck out three batters. Check out the Jamestown Jammers season preview.

RK: Bristol (1-1) @ Princeton (1-1) 7:05pm
Probable Starter: Jon Sandfort (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Bristol 2, Princeton 1

Jonathan Sandfort will make his first start of the 2014 season tonight. The 19-year-old right-hander has spent the last two seasons in the GCL, where he made a total of 17 starts and one relief appearance. Last year, he had a 4.95 ERA in 36.1 innings, giving up 39 hits, three homers and 14 walks. Sandfort had 35 strikeouts, a 1.69 GO/AO ratio and a .281 BAA. GCL: Pirates (0-1) vs Yankees1 (1-0) 10:00am
Probable Starter: Nick Hutchings (NR)
Yesterday’s Result: Yankees1 4, Pirates 3 in 13 innings

Nick Hutchings gets the start today for the GCL Pirates, making his pro debut. He was signed in November 2012 out of Australia and has pitched in the Australian Baseball League. Check out the GCL Pirates season preview.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
