Minor League Schedule: John Kuchno is Getting Better as the Season Moves Along

Probable starter: Rafael Perez (0-0, 0.73)
Yesterday’s Result: Rochester 5, Indianapolis 3

Rafael Perez will make his second start for Indianapolis. He has also pitched twice in relief since the Pirates signed him as a minor league free agent. Perez went six innings in his only start, allowing two runs(one earned) on seven hits and two walks, with two strikeouts. On July 21st, he threw 5.1 innings in relief, giving up one unearned run on eight hits and a walk. Perez has a 2.50 GO/AO ratio and has given up three walks in 12.1 innings

AA: Altoona (42-65) @ Bowie (54-52) 6:35pm
Probable starter: Zack Dodson (2-7, 5.72)
Yesterday’s Result: Altoona 3, Bowie 1

Zack Dodson will make his 17th start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. Dodson has thrown 78.2 innings, giving up 101 hits, eight homers and 33 walks. He has 48 strikeouts, a 1.53 GO/AO ratio and a .321 BAA. In his last start, he gave up four runs on seven hits and seven walks over 5.1 innings. Last time he faced Bowie, Dodson allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in 3.2 innings.

John Kuchno will make his 21st start of the season. He has thrown a total of 110 innings, giving up 102 hits, three homers and 44 walks. He has 53 strikeouts, a 2.55 GO/AO ratio and a .251 BAA. In his last start, Kuchno went seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks. He has lowered his ERA each month this season, from a high of 4.64 in April, down to 3.08 in four starts this month.

In his last start, Dickson gave up five runs(one earned) on four hits and two walks in 2.2 innings. In his four previous starts combined, he allowed three runs over 22.2 innings.

Frank Duncan will make his eighth start of the season tonight. He has thrown 29.2 innings, allowing 37 hits, one homer and five walks. He has 15 strikeouts, an 0.76 GO/AO ratio and a .316 BAA. In his last start, Duncan allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in three innings. It was his shortest outing since his pro debut.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
