Prospect Watch: Big Night For West Virginia Hitters; Horrible Night For Bradenton Hitters

Published:

TOP OF THE SYSTEM

A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Jameson Taillon #1, Clay Holmes #12), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 20 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the mid-season top 20 update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

AAA: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Box Score

Result: Charlotte 8, Indianapolis 3

Starting Pitcher: Jay Jackson, RHP – 2.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

Top Hitter: Jaff Decker, LF – 1-for-3, 2B

Other Notable Performers:

Rafael Perez, LHP – 5.1 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 0 HR

Robert Andino, SS – 1-for-4, 3B

Live Report: After tossing 12.2 scoreless frames, Jay Jackson has had a rough run of it lately. Though his fastball is touching 92, Jackson has allowed 18 runs in his last 16 innings over three outings – a start and seven innings in two relief appearance. Over the span, he has also allowed 27 hits and six walks.

Rafael Perez allowed just one unearned run in 5.1 innings of relief. He struck out four and walked one, but spreading out eight hits. Perez has allowed just one earned run in 12.1 innings since joining Indianapolis, as he work predominantly with a 77-78 mile per hour slider, while sprinkling in an 82-85 mile per hour fastball.

Jaff Decker added his 22nd double of the season. In his past eight games, Decker has had four multi-hit games to go with four doubles. – Ryan Palencer

AA: ALTOONA CURVE

Box Score

Result: New Britain 4, Altoona 3

Starting Pitcher: Zack Dodson, LHP – 5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 BB, 3 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Dan Gamache, 2B – 2-for-3, HR

Other Notable Performers:

Joely Rodriguez, LHP – 2.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 0 HR

Game Notes: Dan Gamache hit his second homer in 12 games for Altoona. He also has six doubles in that span, and now has a .302/.362/.581 line in 43 at-bats. It’s way too early to say whether he’s hitting his way to being a prospect, but he’s off to a good start. Joely Rodriguez made his second appearance out of the bullpen, and threw two shutout innings, although he allowed six base runners. He left the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and was bailed out by Kenn Kasparek, who got the final two outs of the inning, stranding all three runners. Alen Hanson, who was benched for two games after failing to run out a pop up, returned tonight and went 0-for-4.

A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Box Score

Result: Dunedin 3, Bradenton 0

Starting Pitcher: Pat Ludwig, RHP – 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Top Hitter: Raul Fortunato, RF – 1-for-2, 2B

Other Notable Performers:

Walker Gourley, LF – 1-for-4

Game Notes: Bradenton played a double header at the end of last week, which meant they needed a spot starter for today’s game. Pat Ludwig got that start, and surprisingly went seven innings, despite the fact that he threw 1.2 innings in relief just three days ago. Ludwig has success as a starter this year for Bradenton, with a 3.49 ERA in 28.1 innings. He moved up to Altoona, where he struggled in the rotation before being demoted back down to A-ball. The Marauders only had three hits on the night. They also struck out 16 times.

A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER

Box Score

Result: West Virginia 9, Rome 8

Starting Pitcher: Cody Dickson, LHP – 2.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Reese McGuire, C – 3-for-5, 2B

Other Notable Performers:

Austin Meadows, CF – 2-for-5

Erich Weiss, 2B – 2-for-3, 2B, BB

Danny Collins, DH – 1-for-4, HR

Adam Landecker, 3B – 3-for-5

Game Notes: Earlier today I wrote about how Cody Dickson had been turning things around over the last month. That didn’t hold up tonight, as he only lasted 2.2 innings. He didn’t get much help from his defense, getting four unearned runs. Austin Meadows extended his hitting streak to six games. Reese McGuire hit his eighth double of the year. Erich Weiss had an OPS over .800 in the first two months of the season, but has had an OPS just under .600 since then. He looks like he’s starting to hit again, with a .333 average over his last ten games. Danny Collins hit his fourth homer.

A-: JAMESTOWN JAMMERS

Box Score

Result: Staten Island 2, Jamestown 1

Starting Pitcher: Frank Duncan, RHP – 3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Kevin Krause, DH – 1-for-3, 2B

Other Notable Performers:

Taylor Gushue, C – 1-for-4

Game Notes: Taylor Gushue and Kevin Krause were both drafted as catchers in the early rounds of the 2014 draft. Gushue got off to a great start, with a 1.214 OPS in June. He has since cooled, with a .594 OPS in July. He started off hitting for power, with three doubles and four homers in his first 14 games. In his last 14 games he has just two doubles. Krause started off strong, but has stayed strong. He had a 1.014 OPS in June, and has a .947 OPS in July, with three homers each month. The double tonight was his sixth of the season.

RK: BRISTOL PIRATES

Box Score

Result: Johnson City 8, Bristol 4

Starting Pitcher: Hector Garcia, LHP – 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Top Hitter: Maximo Rivera, DH – 2-for-3, 3B, BB

Other Notable Performers:

Enyel Vallejo, LF – 1-for-4, 2B

Nick Buckner, RF – 1-for-4

Game Notes: Maximo Rivera has been hitting well lately. He homered last night, also picking up two hits. That was a few days after going 3-for-3. Tonight he went 2-for-3 with a triple, which was his second of the year. Rivera received a decent bonus out of the Dominican Republic, but hasn’t lived up to the hype, and is looking more like an organizational guy. Nick Buckner continued his hot streak, and now has a 1.101 OPS in his last ten games.

RK: GCL PIRATES

Box Score

Result: Braves 12, Pirates 5

Starting Pitcher: Nick Hutchings, RHP – 4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Carlos Munoz, 1B – 3-for-3, 2 2B, BB

Other Notable Performers:

Yoel Gonzalez, C – 2-for-3, BB

Henrry Rosario, CF – 2-for-4, 2B

Luis Benitez, LF – 2-for-4, 3B

Game Notes: Carlos Munoz had two doubles, giving him six on the year. He also drew a walk, and now has 18 in 23 games, leading to a .452 OBP. After two doubles and a homer in his last three games, his slugging is now up to .480, with a .160 ISO. John Dreker wrote about Munoz the other day, and his ability to take a walk. Nelson Jorge has been struggling at the plate, with a .503 OPS and 32 strikeouts in 65 at-bats. Cole Tucker went 0-for-4 today, dropping his average to .231. He does have a .367 OBP, which is encouraging, especially with the low average.

RK: DSL PIRATES

Box Score

Result: Pirates 4, Phillies 3

Starting Pitcher: Richard Mitchell, RHP – 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Johan De Jesus, 3B – 2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Raul Siri, 2B – 2-for-4, 2B, RBI, SB

Game Notes: Starter Richard Mitchell went five innings without giving an earned run on Monday, allowing him to pick up his team-leading sixth win. In his last four starts combined, he has given up three earned runs and he’s gone three straight starts without allowing a walk. Carlos Bustamante followed Mitchell with two scoreless innings. He has pitched well recently after early season control issues. The Pirates got two hits and an RBI from second baseman Raul Siri, who won the DSL All-Star game MVP on Sunday. He’s now hitting .329 and he collected his 16th double on Monday. Third baseman Johan De Jesus had two doubles and an RBI. Coming into the game, he had five extra-base hits over his first two seasons, all doubles. – John Dreker
