Minor League Schedule: Luis Heredia Looks to Finish Season Strong

Zack Dodson will make his 19th start of the season today. He has also pitched once in relief. Dodson has thrown a total of 91.1 innings, surrendering 109 hits, eight homers and 35 walks. He has 54 strikeouts, a 1.66 GO/AO ratio and a .301 BAA. In his last start, Dodson gave up five runs over 5.2 innings, though just two of those runs were earned. In his prior outing, he threw seven shutout innings.

High-A: Bradenton (62-50, 27-16 2nd half) vs Jupiter (41-70) 6:30pm
Probable starter: John Kuchno (7-8, 3.88)

John Kuchno will make his 23rd start of the season tonight. He has thrown 122.1 innings, allowing 111 hits, three homers and 52 walks. He has 56 strikeouts, an impressive 2.56 GO/AO ratio and a .248 BAA. Kuchno threw 5.1 shutout innings in his last start, giving up two runs and a career-high eight walks. He has a 3.43 ERA at home and a 3.36 mark on the road. Kuchno had a 3.76 ERA before the All-Star break and a 2.97 ERA since. He is just one inning shy of his 2013 total with West Virginia.

Low-A: West Virginia (41-72, 21-24 2nd half) vs Hagerstown (72-43) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Luis Heredia (1-4, 4.53)

Luis Heredia will make his 14th start of the season tonight. He has thrown 59.2 innings, allowing 58 hits, six homers and 28 walks. He has 25 strikeouts, a 1.23 GO/AO ratio and a .257 BAA. In his last start, Heredia went six innings, giving up four runs(one earned) on five hits and two walks. He has gone six innings in each of his last three starts. Heredia had a 4.82 ERA before the All-Star break and a 4.39 ERA since. He has a 3.67 ERA at home this year. In his last outing against Hagerstown, he gave up two runs over six innings. Heredia has just four strikeouts in his last five starts combined.

Probable Starter: Austin Coley (0-1, 9.45)
Yesterday’s Result: Jamestown was off yesterday

Austin Coley will make his fourth start of the season tonight. He went two shutout innings in his last start, allowing a hit and a walk, while striking out two batters. Coley was returning from a shoulder injury that cost him almost six weeks.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
