Minor League Schedule: Nick Kingham Looks to Put Tough July Behind Him

Seven teams on the schedule today, with an off day for Altoona and a doubleheader scheduled for Jamestown. Probable starter: Nick Kingham (4-2, 3.20)
Yesterday’s Result: Toledo 2, Indianapolis 1

Nick Kingham will make his tenth start of the season tonight. He has also made 12 starts for Altoona. Kingham has thrown a total of 127.1 innings this year, allowing 113 hits, six homers and 38 walks. He has 96 strikeouts, a 1.11 GO/AO ratio and a .236 BAA. In his last start, Kingham went six innings, giving up four runs(three earned) on five hits and two walks. He surrendered two homers, topping his total from his first eight starts with Indianapolis. He has struggled in his last three starts, allowing a total of 15 runs in 17.1 innings. Kingham had an 0.34 ERA in June and 5.76 in five July starts.

Chad Kuhl will make his 23rd start of the season tonight. He has thrown 120.2 innings, allowing 111 hits, eight homers and 29 walks. He has 81 strikeouts, a 1.69 GO/AO ratio and a .249 BAA. In his last start, Kuhl allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. Since the All-Star break, he has a 2.88 ERA in 50 innings. Kuhl has a 3.80 ERA at home, 3.12 on the road.

Probable starter: Buddy Borden (5-7, 3.48)

Buddy Borden will make his 22nd start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. Borden has thrown 101 innings, giving up 82 hits, ten homers and 44 walks. He has 89 strikeouts, an 0.96 GO/AO ratio and a .220 BAA. Borden has not faced Hagerstown yet this season. He has a 2.97 ERA at home and 3.76 on the road.

Short-Season A: Jamestown (21-27) vs Lowell (20-27) 4:05pm DH
Probable Starter: Marek Minarik (1-4, 5.00) and Tyler Eppler (0-2, 3.86)
Yesterday’s Result: Jamestown was rained out yesterday

Marek Minarik will make his ninth start today. His last outing came in relief. He went four innings, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. Minarik has a 21/19 BB/SO ratio in 36 innings, with a 1.86 GO/AO ratio and a .250 BAA. Tyler Eppler will make his tenth start of the season. He has thrown 39.2 innings, allowing 37 hits, five homers and eight walks. He has 26 strikeouts, a 1.14 GO/AO ratio and a .240 BAA. In his last start, Eppler gave up one earned run on five hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. Alex McRae could make one of the starts today, as it is his regular day to pitch.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
