Chris Stewart, Jaff Decker, and Justin Sellers Set to Begin the Season on the DL

Published:

There were no roster decisions made this morning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates left McKechnie Field for the last time this Spring. That said, the team announced that Chris Stewart (hamstring), Jaff Decker (left calf strain), and Justin Sellers (sore Achilles tendon) are all set to begin the season on the disabled list.

The announcements give the Pirates 29 active players in camp, meaning they still need four more roster moves. One of those moves will be Clayton Richard’s reassignment to minor league camp. The lefty will begin the 2015 season in extended Spring Training, working on his mechanics. Wilkin Castillo is also expected to be reassigned to minor league camp, where he will likely serve as the backup catcher for Indianapolis.

From there, the Pirates have two roster decisions to make. Arquimedes Caminero is expected to make the bullpen, leaving one spot open for either Jared Hughes or Stolmy Pimentel. The final bench spot will come down to Andrew Lambo or Pedro Florimon. I gave my predictions for both roster moves the other night.

The Pirates play their final Spring Training game in Florida this afternoon when they take on the Yankees. After the game they will fly up to Philadelphia, where they will take on the Phillies for their final two Spring Training games. The final rosters are due at 3:00 PM EST on Sunday.
