Three West Virginia Players Named to SAL All-Star Game

Published:

The South Atlantic League has announced the rosters for their All-Star game to be held on June 23 in Asheville. Representing the WV Power that day, will be outfielder Elvis Escobar, and pitchers Yeudy Garcia and Junior Lopez.

Escobar is hitting .292/.315/.374 in 51 games this year, with 13 doubles. The 20-year-old has been on a recent hot streak after a slow start. He hit .296 in May and has a .348 average this month, so a late push helped him get selected for the team.

Junior Lopez had a run of 11 appearances, totaling 17.2 innings, without allowing a run. That streak was recently snapped, but he is still having a great year out of the bullpen. On the season, he has thrown 22.1 inning, posting an 0.81 ERA, with 17 strikeouts and four saves.

Yeudy Garcia is the first player I can recall ever going from a Dominican Summer League All-Star appearance one year, to a Low-A All-Star game the next. That’s made more impressive by the fact he was in his first year of pro ball last year. He has split his season between long relief and starting, having more success in the latter role. He has a 1.91 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts in 47 innings this season. Garcia starts tonight for the Power.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
