Prospect Watch: JaCoby Jones With Four Hits, Adam Frazier Stays Hot

Published:

TOP OF THE SYSTEM

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season, he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 30 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from early season update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

AAA: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Box Score

Result: Toledo 4, Indianapolis 1

Starting Pitcher: Chris Volstad, RHP – 3.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Alen Hanson, 2B – 2-for-4

Other Notable Performers:

Tony Sanchez, C – 2-for-3, BB

Brent Morel, 3B – 1-for-3, 2B, BB

Game Notes: After replacing Clayton Richard, who was a late scratch due to a trade, Chris Volstad threw a lot of pitches in a short amount of time. In just 3.2 innings of work, Volstad managed to throw 91 pitches, and only 54 for strikes. The short outing broke a string of three straight outings of going at least seven innings for Indianapolis.

In relief of Volstad, Jeff Inman allowed his first run since being promoted to Indianapolis. In 1.1 innings of work, Inman allowed two hits, and a run, while striking out two more. Josh Wall worked two scoreless innings, striking out three. Bobby LaFromboise pitched a perfect inning, while striking out two of his own.

Alen Hanson continued his strong work since returning from the DL with a pair of knocks. Tony Sanchez also picked up a pair of hits, as he looks to break out of a long slump.

AA: ALTOONA CURVE

Box Score

Result: Trenton 10, Altoona 4

Starting Pitcher: Zack Dodson, LHP – 6.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0 HR

Top Hitter: Adam Frazier, SS – 2-for-2, 2 2B, 2 R, BB

Other Notable Performers:

Jose Ozuna, SS – 1-for-4, RBI, 2B

Dan Gamache, 3B – 3-for-5, 2B, R, RBI

Game Notes: While Zack Dodson allowed ten hits in the contest, he did a decent job of spreading them around in six innings of work. However, Trenton plated four combined runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings that proved to be the difference in the contest. After allowing just three hits last time out, Dodson has allowed 8, 12 and 10 hits in his other outings in the last few times out.

Matt Benedict relieved Dodson and really struggled, allowing four hits, two walks and five earned runs while getting just two outs. Tom Harlan allowed three hits an a run in 1.1 innings of work.

Adam Frazier continued his hot run, with a pair of doubles. Frazier has a six game hitting streak after Friday and four of those have been multi-hit affairs.

A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Box Score

Result: Bradenton 9, Charlotte 8

Starting Pitcher: Jayson Aquino, RHP – 5.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Top Hitter: JaCoby Jones, SS – 4-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Austin Meadows, CF – 2-for-5, HR, R, RBI

Barrett Barnes, LF – 2-for-4, 2 R, RBI

Game Notes: Since being acquired from the Toronto system, it has been a mixed bag when it comes to success for Jayson Aquino. Unfortunately for him, Friday night was the bad version of this. The six earned runs that he allowed on Friday night broke a string of three straight starts in which he allowed two earned runs. The nine hits that he allowed was just one shy of his season high as well.

Henry Hirsch relieved Aquino and allowed a pair of runs on three hits in two innings of work. Junior Lopez also worked a pair of scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk.

JaCoby Jones picked up four hits, including his ninth home run of the season. Austin Meadows also added his third home run of the campaign.

A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER

Other Notable Performers:

Chase Simpson – 1-for-3

Dovydas Neverauskas, RHP – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR

Game Notes: Alex McRae ran into some tough luck for West Virginia, as he allowed only three hits and a walk, yet still allowed three runs to cross the plate to take the loss. McRae has seen a similar result most of the season, in fact. He has allowed more than seven hits only twice this season, but has a season ERA of 4.06.

Dovydas Neverauskas tossed a perfect inning in relief, aiding his season of mixed results. West Virginia was only able to muster a pair of hits in the seven-inning, rain shortened contest.

In his two prior outings, Brubaker had also allowed six hits, but he also allowed five and four runs to go along with them.

Jerry Mulderig relieved Brubaker and allowed two hits and a run in his inning of work. Sean Keselica also worked an inning, allowing two hits and two runs, while walking three. Julio Eusebio worked a scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

West Virginia was only able to pick up four hits and two belonged to Ty Moore. Moore now has hits in six of his last seven contests, including four multi-hit efforts.

Ke’Bryan Hayes, 3B – 0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K

Game Notes: For the second straight outing, 19-year-old Luis Escobar was dominant for the GCL Pirates. In fact, it was the second consecutive time that Escobar, who is a converted third baseman, allowed just one hit in five innings. In addition, Escobar has a 10:1 K/BB ratio.

Eric Thomas picked up a pair of hits and scored a run. This marked the third game in the last four where Thomas has picked up two hits in a contest.

RK: DSL PIRATES

The Pirates had a 5-0 lead at one point and also led 12-9 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Starter Adonis Pichardo threw three scoreless innings before getting knocked out in the fourth frame. Five errors by the Pirates led to four unearned runs being scored. Pichardo now has a 5.53 ERA through seven starts, though he still has 25 strikeouts in 27.2 innings.

Melvin Jimenez and Huascar Fuentes drove in three runs apiece, while Mikell Granberry and Eddy Vizcaino each added a pair of RBIs.
